Hi, sounds like a defective igniter. Replacing it will solve your problem assuming the burners you say light are the cook top burners. A defective igniter only affects the oven burner.

Most of these will have the oven bake ignitor become weak and not ignite the gas when turned on.
you should see the bake ignitor try to glow orange but the gas will not lit to the burner.
without a digital meter to read the current, should be 3.2-3.5 amps then you wont know if the ignitor is weak.
you could try to just replace it and see if that fixes you trouble.

I have an old gas stove. No igniter.Lights with pilot light only. Stove top burners work fine.Oven does not ignite. The pilot lite is on.I smell no gas when I turn it on.

Pilot flame has to hit the thermocouple. If pilot is dory flame.will be weak and not reaching the thermocouple that tells the oven there is a flame and opens the burner. If the pilot is strong and no gas to burner than that thermocouple. ( 100% safely valve is worn out) replace that and you are good

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

Oven is slow ot light and has a gas smell when

Hi, this sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, if it does light the burner, there may be delayed ignition (pop), does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Maytag gas oven doesn't heat, but oven's pilot light is on.

Get the oven checked out by a professional, if you have a gas leak you can easily blow up the entire house and you with it. I think you have a faulty gas valve based on what you wrote

Gas smell when oven turned on

CALL THE GAS COMPANY AND TELL THEM YOU SMELL GAS ... SOME GAS COMPANIES STILL COME OUT FOR FREE TO CHECK. DO NOT TELL HIM A BUNCH OF DETAILS. JUST THAT YOU SMELL GAS AT THE STOVE. CHANCES ARE YOU WILL GET A NICE GUY WHO MAY TELL YOU EXACTLY WHATS WRONG AND FIX IT. EVEN IF THEY CHARGE YOU CAN PAY THEM IN SMALL AMOUNTS EACH MOTH FOR THE BILL. 50 SECONDS IS TOO LONG ...THE 20-40 SECONDS ALLOWS FOR THE SLOW STEADY INCREASE OF GAS FLOW TO START ... TO AVOID THE GAS COMMING ON AT FULL PREASURE AND CAUSING A "HARD IGNITION" OF THE BURNERS. THE GAP AND THE CORECT DISTANCE OF THE LOCATION OF THE IGNITOR TO THE BURNERS SHOULD BE CHECKED.THIS GAP IS USUALLY IN THE SPEC. MANUAL. ALSO MAKE SURE THE FLAME SENSOR IS IN THE FLAME. FOR THE FACT YOU SAY THIS IS HAPPENING TO BOTH UPPER AND LOWER BURNERS LEAVES ME TO THINK THE GAS PRESSURE IS NOT CORRECT GOING INTO THE APPLIANCE ... THE GAS COMPANY WILL CORRECT THAT. GOOD LUCK AND BE SAFE !!!! Joe_Rex
