I'm Not So Good With Technical Hook-ups. I own a Dell Comuter XP and plugged the green prong for the speakers in the hard drive back. I left the metal prong unplugged. The computer says, yep, it's hooked up; BUT, I have no sound. I also checked the volume and it's not muted and is turned up on full blat. Now what? Thank you.

Connect red to red side, black to black side. White in the middle and green to the frame of the dryer. make sure all connections are tight but beware of overtightening the electrical terminals I recently fixed a dryer exactly like this that had a 4 prong setup. Take a look:
Many applications (like web page videos, media players) have their own volume controls, separate from the main windows control. Since you can hear other sounds, I would guess that the volume is lowered/muted on these applications. To check this, look for a slider bar or speaker icon on the web page, or the media player. Adjust slider up, and also check for a a mute button (often a red circle over the volume control). Adjust and re-test, and you should be good to go.
1. This is how your computer looks like at the back notice red rectangle are your speaker ports. Look for the green port at the back
And this is how the speaker looks like at the back. Just hook up the green connector at the green jack. hook up the plug for your speaker you are all set.
2 things are needed to get sound from your speakers:
1-wiring connecting your speakers to a socket to the back of the computer. (The spot they need to plug in to ON YOUR COMPUTER is a small light green circular socket. The other end of the plug you plug in here should run to one of your speakers *usually the right side speaker-the right speaker should then have separate wiring to connect the left speaker.)
2- A source of power.
Some speakers use their own power source and plug in to a power outlet - your wall. Other types have a USB type plug and plug into a USB port in your computer and that is how THOSE get their power.
Those are the basics of sound setup. Some computers are equipped with more complicated setups such as surround sound, subwoofers, digital and more. Reply if you need more help, I will try to assist you further.
and what is keeping you from doing exactly what you want to do? Sometimes multi-channel (5.1, 7.1 systems) use various color plugs and jacks. The regular 2.0 and 2.1 speakers plug in to the green jack, no need to include any monitor at all. Just bypass and plug speakers directly into your computer. Does this solve the problem?
I bought cheapy speakers for my computer and they sound amazing ... like $20 at Target. :)
However, if you are looking for decent sound, here is a review of some top speakers.
Mine came with detailed instructions in the box, which amounted to - plug into the electric outlet on the wall, and then put the green plug into the green dot on the back of my computer. Super easy!
try to plug it at the back of the computer you will see there the outlet for the speaker , it has 3 color, pink for the mic, green for the speaker , hook up the green input cable from your altec lansing to the green outlet of the PC then plug the speaker to the power and there you go h\you have your speaker running
Hook on speakers to the right jack.
Most of times it is the Green Jack you must plug in the speaker. See for the speaker icon below the jack, that should give you the clue...
Hope this helps...
