Funai DRV-B2737 Error message

Cannot record from VHS to DVD without the same error message appearing every time and preventing recording taking place -'Cannot record on this disk E4 54037380'.
There is nothing wrong with the discs -x8 - as recommended by Funai.

  • n3syj Mar 26, 2008

I am getting the same error message.

All I am trying to do is record on to dvd.

I contacted the help line and all they could do was suggest that i put in a cleaning disc which i did but am still getting the same error message. I am using the correct discs and the machine plays dvd,s o.k, so there is no problem with the laser.

  • Kdsouth Apr 04, 2008

I've discovered that Funai have deliberately offered this machine, the DRV-B2767, in the full knowledge that the recording laser (not the playing laser - there are two) will fail. They have no 'back-up' repair system available for it and I suspect never intended to make this available as other manufacturers do.
This must surely be an extremely cynical attitude for all of us having purchased this machine which Funai know will fail in less than 2 years. The advice they give to use a cleaning disc is pure nonsense in that it will not clean the recording laser at all.
We all suffer from 'built in obsolescence' found in many household electrical goods but this takes the term to a much higher and, frankly, dishonest level. I intend to make this as public as I can through any agency who will listen via broadcasting, newspapers and government agencies who deal with sharp practice. I hope others will do the same.

  • Kdsouth Sep 12, 2008

The 'solutions' provided for the problem of the Funai DRV-B2767 miss the point completely. It has nothing to do with 'copyrighted material' at all but it is a blatant failure of the machine and Funai surely know this. As for the 'solution' regarding using only DVD-R I can only say that insults those of us who have been trying to do just that. Using 2x speed discs, well, try and find them - anywhere!
This problem rests wholely with Funai and I challenge them to solve it. I certainly won't entertain buying anything from them again and would recommend all other potential buyers to do the same.

I have same frustrating problem, bought the machine to enable me to copy my vcr discs onto dvd. Only managed to do three when it all of a sudden it decided to dish out error message 'can't record on to this disc' yet was managing fine, previously. Funai, gave me the same rubbish about dvd laser cleaner, this does not work.....

Yep same problem - now won't even play DVD's...

  • Anonymous Nov 10, 2008

The reason i bought the Funai DRV-B2737 was because of the ability for it to copy from VHS to DVD which it did up until a few months ago.Now i am getting an error message when it tries to format the disc saying 'cannot copy to disk'. And going by what i have read from others on here it seems to be a design faly with the machine.I will be going back to Curries where i purchased the machine and going through proceedings about getting my money back. The guarantee has expired but i bought using mastercard so am protected to the fact that there seems to be a design problem here.

i have the same error code when trying to copy a vhs to dvd, or trying to copy of the tv, error code e-54037380 im not happy and will not be buying any thing else of them

  • iamwill Dec 24, 2008

I have the same problem. I have tried a variety of DVD -r and +r. I am trying to copy home video's which do not have a copyright. I continue to get the same message but different codes. The codes are telling you its the wrong disc, disc needs cleaning etc. I have finally come to terms with the fact that it is not going to work again, ever. I have had this machine for nearly two years and have use it only a few times. Playing DVDs and videos is not a problem. Its just the recording, and that's why I purchased it. Stay away from this machine.

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2009

I also have the same problem. Bought the unit mainly to copy VHS to DVD. I've only used it 3 or 4 times in the last 18 months. Now suddenly I get the same error message about being unable to record to disk. I'm sorry to hear that so many other people have the same problem but I'm sure that Funai couldn't give a toss about it. I won't buy them again and I will advise everyone I know not to as well.

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2009

same problem - tried several discs and checking all conncetions but clearly this is a fault with the recorder.

    Do not buy this product!

  • baffledbabe Jan 19, 2009

my machine has decided to be selective as to whether it will play pre recored DVD's and frequenly stalls during playback. The Funai helpline number is disconnected. I was debating whether to have a technician look at the machine with a view to cleaning the optical reader but in view of the comments posted on this site think that I'd be wasting my money.

  • SallyMC Feb 04, 2009

    Hi

I too am getting the same error message when using 4x discs but seems to accept 2x discs. Strangely it worked on the first 6 or so 4x that I used over Christmas but now I just get the error message - have tried all 19 of them in case there were a few faulty discs, but all the same. I'm really cross about it as the 4x discs are reasonably expensive and it was pointless buying them. Any suggestions? I am happy to complain to whoever

    Thanks

    Sally

  • nomail710 Apr 25, 2009

I'd had this problem with my 2737 for quite some time but haven't had the time to fix this until now.
Just for the record it has one laser unit inside which fires off two frequencies one for read the other for write. Anyway, I've been repairing Playstation 1 and 2 and Xbox for years and the most common problem seem to be disc read errors caused by seemingly failing lasers or scratched/damaged discs.
The manufacturer sets these lasers at safe usable limits but after some use they start malfunctioning.
I wanted to copy a VHS recorded disc to my PC tonight only to find I hadn't finalised it in my Funai.
Realising I couldn't because of the silly E4 54037380 error I finally took the plunge and dismantled the unit.

NOTE: the following is not for the faint hearted and please use an antistatic wrist strap to earth yourself.

The Disc tray mechanism has to be removed and a small circuit board directly to the right has too be released. There are a plethora of ribbon cables but only one needs disconnection. Carefully turn the disc drive mechanism on it's back and un clip the thick ribbon cable that attaches to the laser. Tuck the cable out of the way being careful not to damage it. Move the lens unit to the top of the tray mechanism and note there are two potetiometers Using a pot tool or fine flat bladed screwdriver adjust the lower pot by an eigth of a turn (this increases the frequency of the recording laser enough to eliminate the E4 54037380 error completely or it did in my case).Problem solved fully working recorder.

Dismantling procedure

Disconnect Funai from mains and remove the top casing (5 screws)

There are 4 screws holding disc drive mechanism in front right most tricky (use grabber tool to retrieve screw)
Top right has an earth cable connected to it
The other end of the earth cable is held in by another screw on the circuit board next to the drive mechanism this also needs removing
The screw directly below this with the metal earth case strip remove.
The board is held on by two small plastic lugs which need compressing so the board can pop up.
Remove drive mechanism carefully along with the circuit board and flip the whole lot over. Be mindful of the ribbon cables as they are fragile

Try using old-fashioned 2x DVD-RW discs, eg the cheap ones from Datawrite.
This seems to work in my machine MOST of the time.

I had the same problem BUT I HAVE FOUND ONE SPECIFIC BRAND OF DISC WHICH ALWAYS WORK...

Whatever I put in I usually get the 'Cannot record' error, however I try, except for one specific brand of disc which always seem to work! Don't ask me why I have no idea, I am not technical in that way!

They are a cheap and nasty brand (yes the Top brands dont work!) called LIVEWIRE, I buy these from... Poundworld, yes, poundworld, you get three discs in a pack and a little pen to write on them. THEY WORK EVERY TIME..

They are DVD-R, I know they do +R too but I HAVENT tried these so I don't know if the +R work. Although they are write once discs, it's still great to have the machine working. However, it hasn't changed anything, none of the others work....

If anyone hasn't got a 'poundworld' or wants to get hold of some of these I will be happy to help you!! [email protected] I am just a frustrated funai user looking to help others!

Hope this has helped.
Phil

I think it is something to do with CPRM, which does not let you record copyrighted material!.(its activated in the funai recorder) its a pain in a ***, as i recorded a programme of the tv onto vhs, but the recorder will not let me record that vhs onto DVD-R.

VHS to DVD-R

You say "home made" - not sure what you mean by that. If it was a copy of something that was originally retail, it's possible the Macrovision encoding copied over with it - in which case your DVD recorder is working as it's supposed to to prevent illegal copying of disks. I'm a bit wary of getting into this in any depth, as it treads the lines of legality. If I found a way for you to bypass this copy protection, it would allow you to pirate movies freely. I'm not going to discuss my own feelings on that, but I will say that I'm not going to support such actions on a public forum. That being said, if for some reason your totally legitimate home made tape managed to get something that's being interpreted as Macrovision coding on it, you may want to do a google search for digital video stabilizer. That will point you in the right direction.

Record errors

If your dvd player only supports dvd+r discs then that is the only way it will record. It will only record once onto the dvd-rw and, since it doesn't support the re-writables, it won't be able to use this function. This is the most likely reason for the first error. The second problem is a little confusing. Is it when you are trying to record on dvd-rs or dvd-rws that it says it can't record? I hope this post was helpful (for the first error, anyway). Good luck! I hope everything works out! Sincerely, Der Strom

Error code E 4 54040990

You need to go into the set up menu and select recording options. On the recording options menu, scroll down to dubbing options. On the dubbing options menu select either VCR to DVD or DVD to VCR.
Recording and Dubbing are not the exactly the same thing. You use the record buttons to record TV directly to VCR/DVD you use the dubbing buttons and set up to record DVD to VCR or VCR to DVD.
Hope this helps.

Dvd is unable to read disk that i recoreded on the lg dvd recorder

It would be nothing to do with the TV.

DVD RW discs only last for so long if you have re-written to them many times they may be just worn out. Or is it with all RW discs?

Are you trying to watch them on the same player you recorded them on or is it a different DVD Player you are trying to watch them on?

SAMSUNG DVD R120 error EC:0207

I had exactly the same problem -- error message of "This disc can be neither played nor recorded. Please check the disk [EC:0207]" after the machine had been working fine for a year. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung website, burned it to a CD-R disk (took three tries until the DVD Recorder recognized the disk -- worked when I used Rocio CD Creater software), then loaded the firmware updates to the DVD Recorder. On the Samsung website you can retrive the firmware update instructions as well. I had to perform the firmware upgrade several times until it successfully updated both the system firmware as well as the disk firmware. After successfully updating both, the Recorder now recognizes the DVD-R disks and I was able to resume recording. I have however, noted some choppiness with the playback of the newly recorded disks. Other than that, the firmware upgrade successfully resolved the problem.

Problem dubbing from VHS to DVD

Try different brands of disk, most dvd-r recorder are disk sensitive, buy only one disk per brand, find the brand compatible to your recorder by just inserting the disk and wait for confirmation that it is ready for recording session. I have tried around five brands, sony and maxell as well as verbatim are good dvd-r disk.

Emerson DVd with Video Cassette Recorder EWR20V5

Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again. If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.
