Have a close look at connections and element condition. most like element is damaged and is drawing too high a current. Best not to touch these things when cleaning but use soft bruch and vacuum.(unit unplugged ;O) Bad connections will also cause this.

Cannot get the 'SERVICE REQUIRED" light to turn off even after cleaning the plate with ammonia and water.

Just remove the filter from the back of the unit. You will find an Ozone sensor above the fuse. Carefully remove
it and put the unit on MANUAL mode and the service light will go out. It was put there to help comply government'
requirements and really service no purpose. It did not properly monitor anything so just operate you unit in the
MANUAL mode like the original Classics and it will be fine. Remember to throughly clean the unit once a year.

Sharper Image Midi S1853 / NO BREEZE

I have the same problem and haven't been able to fix it. However, others have had the same problem and have posted their solutions. The sizzling sound is caused by electrical arching between the plates and one or both of the two tungsten wires that are run parallel to the plates (if you turn off all the lights and wait for your eyes to adjust to the dark before turning on the Ionic Breeze, it's a pretty cool light show!) Here are things found by others to cause the arching and what they did to fix the problem:
  • --dirt, lint, or tiny hairs stuck somewhere (usually towards the top or bottom of the plates or wire, and maybe in the grid contact points). Clean it better. Using canned air can help blow out the problem.
  • --water droplets. Make certain there is no moisture anywhere when you put the grid (plates) back in. Using canned air can help dry hard to reach areas.
  • --burn marks or melted plastic. These indicates a short circuit. Says dnewcombe1: "There is a feeler bracket that guides the two rear thin wires while the cartridge is being inserted. This "feeler" can melt and become disarranged." You can't fix this issue.
  • --build up on the ionizing wires. Clean them. It's hard. I took mine apart and used steel wool.

"clean" light

Sharper Image was giving customers a small rebate for the product since it was proven to be ineffective for cleaning the air by Consumer Reports as well data by the EPA.

This has caused a mess for Sharper Image that they went into bankruptcy as a result of it. The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision on ionizers at the end of year since there are hazards in the air from using the devices. It could be that ionizers are no longer sold in the US next year.

The industry should have been regulated and unfortunately the government never did anything about it until Sharper Image and Consumer Reports went to court on it.

One hissing one shut down

I have two Quadras not sure about the GPS. The only way to clean them properly is to complete the folowing steps. This will eliminate the hissing noises and intermittent shutdowns. Clean the blade unit as normal and leave it out of the unit. Unplug the unit, remove the four phillip screws on the top of the unit where the collector grid slides down. Next remove the four screws holding on to the base of the unit. After this you will see two additional screws also by the base that need to be removed. Look carefully between the grills of the unit and you will see about 12 to fifteen tiny screws that hold the grill together. After these are removed take off the UL label and seprate the grill. You may have to gently pull up on the top where the power switch is located. I have found if you use a lightly dampened scotch brite pad to carefully clean the two wires works best. Clean the wires and pins at the bottom and make sure all is well. Use a microfiber or lint free cloth to gently wipe everthing down and make sure the unit is dry. Put it back together and put the UL sticker back on.

PURE Ion shuts off after a few moments

You need to shut it off, unplug it, and pull both the filters out at once and then plug it back in, and push both filters in at the same time, simultaneously. This will re-set it.
Also, if this continues to happen, you must vacuum the insides of the unit, aside from the filters, themselves, it can get all clogged up.
We live on a busy street and our house can get REALLY dusty, we have a older home with carpets and two cats - so our unit really has to work hard!
Good luck!
