RAM: 2gig PC2-4200 ram (Hynix is the brand i think?)
VID: ATI X1400 256mb
HDD: 80gb 5400rpm hd
OS: Windows Media Center w/ SP3 and latest updates
LCD: 15.4" WSVGA+
The problem is the image on the screen will just disappear.The monitor semms to just turn off but I can still hear the fan and hardrive on. I still see green lights on the laptop.
Playing a game or surfing the internet, it doesnt matter, you hear like a click noise the screen goes blank.
At first I though it may have been in sleep mode so I turnd everthing to never in batery saving mode. The problem still occurs. I have swithced usb mouses and dell batteries and also ac adapter. The sgut down still occurs.
Interestingly I can correct the problem shuting the laptop down hard and removing the battery for a few seconds. After putting the battery back the laptop starts up fine
I'm thinking it may be an inverter issue but I am not a technician.

Had exact same problem and had technician put it apart to clean. Then put back together. Got another 12 months out of the 5 yr old Inspiron. Will do that again to get another few months. Or trade in for latest and greatest if get a good deal.
I also never put it into sleep or hub automatic. Hope helps.
When you click on Power Options, the power options screen will open. Here you can select a power plan, change plan settings.
When you click the Change plan settings option below any of the listed power plans, the Edit Plans Setting screen
will open allowing you to change when the computer should turn off the
display and when to put the computer to sleep, as well as the
brightness setting of the display.
Turn off the display = Never
Put the computer to sleep = Never

Press and hold
Release both buttons. The PSA diagnostics sequence begins.

You might be able to verify by taking a fairly bright flashlight and aiminig across your screen when it does shut off. If you can see the image, it's probably the inverter.
If you've tried an external monitor and it does the same thing, it's probably the video card (hopefully yours is the replaceable kind.)
Six screws on the bezel and carefully pop it off. The inverter is on the bottom of the screen. I just replaced a broken screen on that exact model.
