Spooler crashes when printing random PDF's

Some PDF's print and others do not. I'll get the spooler crash error message and all my printers will be gone. then I have to delete everything from windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS folder and restart the spooler (net start spooler)... any solutions? It seems random.

PC is rebooted daily, so I'm not sure what's up. Is it a driver issue? The printer supports PCL so I'm at a loss.

  • MIT-Derek Feb 25, 2008

Same problem. The rebooting solution is a 1st grade answer. There is a real problem here with this printer. I have been able to replicate this problem on every pc on our network with this printer and have narrowed it down to pdf's that are scanned documents cause the print spooler to lock up. The file size the driver sends to the printer is massive, even if the file is 1mb, the file in the spooler queue shows 50 to 100mb.

This is a problem with multiple versions of the drivers from HP also. Restarting the computer after having the spooler fixed and send the document back to the printer and it immediately locks again.

Installing new drivers dind't help. But what I did is I checked print as an image from within pring options in Adobe Acrobat (you gotta go to "advanced" to find that check box), and then it worked.

I had the exact same problem and I solved it by uninstalling Adobe Acrobat and installing Foxit. No more problem!

Had the problem for a few days.

I solved it by downloading the latest HP drivers from hp (that goes without saying)

Installing these on my print server, replacing the existing drivers.

and disabling bidirectional printing.

This is working in my office now.

Make sure you re-boot your computer once in a while, say once a week, if you leave it on all the time or use standby. Not doing so can leave the computer vulnerable to all kinds of weird things like this.

Hope this helps.

An office I support has lots of these and over the course of time every pc has had this issue.

The only solution I've found was to delete the printer, reinstall it, use the 1022nw drivers and uncheck advanced printing features once installed.

Another procedure :

Go to START
Right click on DOS command prompt and run as administrator
You should be in this command directory before you
Type CMD and be sure you are in this directory C:Windows\System32
And if not, type this to change the directory, CHDIR C:Windows\System32
Type NET STOP SPOOLER and message will appear like this

benjz_1.png
Exit and go to C: DRIVE
Choose WINDOWS and click show content if not view all the folder files
Choose SYSTEM32
Choose SPOOL
Choose printer and delete printing jobs if any
Again right click on Command prompts and run as administrator
Type NET START SPOOLER
Exit and restart your printer and your computer
I will works fine right now.

NOTE : You can bypass the C:Drive procedure and just type NET STOP SPOOLER AND NET START SPOOLER in the DOS COMMAND PROMPT if you believe that there are no printing jobs pending.

Another procedure is to download this troubleshooting software and follows the troubleshooter wizard and it will fix your print spooler service automatically and some common problems as well.

Printing problem (local and network) only with pdf

PDF files are designed to be small on the computer and are uncompressed when sent to the printer. The size of the PDF is filling up the memory on the print server causing it to crash.

make sure you have the latest printer drivers.

heres a work around if the drivers didn't fix it. check "print as an image" from within printing options in Adobe Acrobat (you gotta go to "advanced" to find that check box), and then it works fine.

Hi There !!

Thank you for writing to Fixya.com

It seems to be that, your print spooler service is crashing & once you restart the machine. It's actually reinitialized & it work for a while & then get stuck again. I have seen these kind of problem in past & best possible step would be to reset the Print Spooler service. To do that check the below link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000007

Once you go to the above mentioned link, you will find a picture there:

Click that button & it'll reset the print spooler service & you might need to reinstall the printer driver back again.

Hope this would help !

"fatal print spooler error" error message

Completely uninstall the printer driver and install again. If this does not work, there is a corruption in the windows registry or in the print spooler cache files.

For a temporary workaround, disable print spooling. But, if you do, you will need to remember to never close an application you print from until printing is actually finished.

Print spooler crashes on Vista business

How do you connect the printer? Try to do it manually. Instead of searching for the printer on the network, give the path manually.
For ex.: \\name_of_the_server\name_of_the_shared_printer.
