Try this procedure:

Adjust the green & blue CRT screens to match the red. Go into your picture menu adjust, turn color all the way down to a black & white picture. Now adjust each CRT screen so that you end up with a true black & white picture. Then adjust each focus control to get a sharp picture, and adjust each CRT focus one at a time for clarity by covering the other two up. Then go back into picture adjust and turn color half way up, you should see a better picture.

If you cannot get the blue & green to even out to a black & white screen you have other problems such as faulty CRT card on back of tube or it could even be that the video IC is faulty. If this is the case, then you may have to get a competent local technician to check the TV and get the necessary parts replaced. It could set you back between $200-$400, depending upon how many components need replacing.

You can also try a hard reset..Unplug all cables, including power from the back of TV. Wait for 4 hrs and reconnect them. Try and see if it works now.

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

P.S. Before you assign a rating, please make sure that the issue is resolved or you are satisfied. The picture has colored shadows and doubled images. People are doubled shadows are red green purple. I would like to know if it worth fixing the tv is about Ten years old. Thank You

In a nutshell, the convergence ICs have failed. The cost to fix by a service company is likely about $300. You may find someone who does it on the side for around $150.

If you are happy with the picture, you like the tv, then $150 might be worth it.

It is possible to do this repair yourself if you have an electronics background.

Hitachi 43FDX15B distorted picture. The top of screen displays a half circle cirle and the image is distorted within the half circle. The same at the bottom of the screen. The middle of the screen is fine....

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Color shadowing on screen

I had similar symptoms about a year ago. Also came on sudden. The red convergence chip had burned out (poor heat sinking on this model Hitachi). Replacing the color convergence chips fixed it. ($50 for parts.) First, however, have you tried the "magic focus" function? That's explained in the manual, which is available online IIRC, but I'd have to look for the link if you need it.

This is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors.Shops usually charge from $200-$300

I have an Hitachi 43FDX15B. The tv worked perfect

sounds like the convergence is out of whack. you will need to call a local repair shop and see if they can realign the color guns inside the unit. this is actually a really common problem with moving a rear projection screen.

Will not show red color in picture, magic focus shows red though

You have a projection light element out. I had the green element go on mine. I had a service agreement so a repair tech changed it.

You can try replacing the convergence IC's ...should cost you about 350-400$..Its your choice at the end of the day,,It could also be that the lamp is blown and you will need it to be replaced. Best option..call a tech and get a quote and then decide..

Hitachi 61SDX picture got dim shows Code 3

use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.
