Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data)has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit. It's also one of the first things that Garmin will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will beread from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on theNuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

Ifpossible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.

I hope that helps.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W get stuck or freeze at startup or when loading maps?

One trick to try when your GPS is acting up is to perform a Hard Reset.

Occasionally, your GPS may not start properly at all, and display a 'System Software Missing" message. Today's tip will describe how to restore your Nuvi GPS system software using Garmin Webupdater.

73be3b4.gif

  1. The first step is to download the WebUpdater software.
  2. Plug in your Nuvi GPS into your PC with the USB cord.
  3. Run the WebUpdater program to install it to your PC and update the system software of your GPS.

Your Garmin Nuvi should be running as good as new.

I bay n sd card with full europe maps and i put the sd on the garmin 205w but he doesnt work hi dosent show ani maps on the screen

The Nuvi should detect the maps on the SDCARD automatically. A notice appears on the screen to install the maps on your Nuvi. This will take a while to copy the maps from the SDCARD to your unit for installation. After this the maps should be able to function without the SDCARD present.

The Garmin Nuvi needs internal memory for map installation. If there's not much memory left the Map installation might fail. Remaining memory can be checked by connecting the Nuvi to a PC/MAC using an USB cable. It ill appear as an external USB drive. The properties of the USB drive shows remaining memory.

If remaining memory is under 5Gb it might not be enough for MAP install. In this case a master reset to the factory defaults clears memory. This will delete all user data so be sure to store your personal POI's in Mapsource.

A master reset starts by pressing the bottom left corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds while pressing the power button once. A question appears to clear all user data.

Garmin Nuvi 1350 - will not power on unless I hold power button down for the 10 second reset. At this point, the device powers on until it reaches the "loading maps" point and then shuts down.

If your device is currently experiencing the following symptoms it may need to come in for service/repair:
  • The device powers on and freezes at the Garmin logo with no trademark or copywrite info displayed on the device which normally shows up below the logo. The device will not display the Main Menu and will not go into Mass Storage Mode.
  • The device powers on and freezes at the Garmin logo and then flashes a white screen briefly. The device then begins a loop of showing the Garmin logo and then flashes the white screen over and over again. The device will not display the Main Menu and will not go into Mass Storage Mode.
  • The device powers on and then freezes or shuts down when displaying the Loading Maps screen.

Periodically, the firmware or 'brains' inside phones, mp3 players and GPS devices get confused. They begin to work erratically, or refuse to complete their startup routine at all. The good news is that 99% of the time, new life can be breathed into them by either a reset procedure or a firmware / system software replacement.

Here are the steps to fix your Garmin Nuvi 205W:

  1. If your Garmin NUVI 205 is seen when connected by USB, I recommend you backup your favorites.
