I owned a Tom Tom One New Eidtion US CA from 2006. To update the map I purchased the Original Map Update on Jan. 02/2010. When I tried to update my TomTom, I got an error message: Not enough space on your device. I then checked and found out that my GPS memory is 1G whereas the new map is 1,468MB which is almost 0.5G bigger than the my GPS's memory.
I called the customer support. They suggested I have to get a DS cards of 2G for the new map.
My Tom Tom does have an external slot for the SD card, but I have never needed to use it. I wonder how it works. If I successfully load the map, where it will be located, the internal memory or the external SD card.
I have a thought I might buy the wrong map. I should buy the US-Canada one which is 821.7MB and will fits well in the GSP memory instead the the North America's.
Please avidse.
Thanks,
I am assuming that, without being a GEEK, you are sufficiently proficient with a computer. I will describe the procedure with all the necessary details. I use Windows XP and all folders I refer to are in Windows OS hierarchy. I have tried all except starting from the SD card, I happen not to have a 2GB card ready.
I suggest you read the whole post, think about its feasability from your point of view, and proceed from there. If you have any misgivings about what I say, DO NOT DO IT. I shall NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR GPS.
First of all you should install the HOME application on your computer. Then you connect your GPS to the computer. When it asks you if you want to connect to the computer tap YES, and the HOME application will launch. You may let it perform an update (if any ) of the OS (application that manages the GPS). Do not let it make any update of the OLD map. On each screen you have a CANCEL button.
Use the TomTom Home Application to backup your device. The backup will be stored on your computer, and you will be able to restore it in case of a problems.
Disconnect your GPS and insert the SD Card in slot. Then connect the GPS to the computer and let it communicate with the HOME application.
When HOME launches it will show you the internal memory of the GPS and the SD card and you are asked to select from where to run the device. Select the external SD card.
If any thing goes wrong STOP.
In the main window of the HOME application use the right arrow to go to go to Backup and restore icon. Click the icon, HOME will restore the application and the old map, all that is on the internal memory.
If that does not work, I think you should copy the content of the backup folder \My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Backup\GO\Backup01 on the SD card. and try restarting the system from the external card.
What remains to be done is to look for the new map and put at the right place in the HOME folder.
Here I will show you the directory hierarchy in WindowsXP
On my computer the map is
\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\complete\map
In this directory there is folder called North_America_2GB. It contains a 1kB activation Zip archive file, a 1.5GB map zip archive, a 6kB table of contents (. toc file) and two image files.
Once the application and the map are on the external SD card you should be able to start the device from the internal memory or the SD card. When you turn it on you will probably see two icons (one of the internal mempory and the other for the SD card) . They will be flashing for a short while. You have to tap the one that you want to start with.
Important Update. I had to try it myself. I gave all the information above as a way to avoid mistakes. Now that I experimented on my TomTom Go 730 I can tell you that the procedure is very simple.
And Do make a backup, even frequent backups just in case you run into trouble at some future time
Here it is.
Copy the map on your external memory card. When you want to use it use the following Menu Options
Change Preferences=>>Manage Maps=>>Switch Map.
On the list of available maps, you will see the old one and the new one. Select the new one and Drive. You may have to add the POI's on the memory card or additional voice.
