Fahrenheat Electric Hydronic Baseboard Heater, 240 Volt Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 06, 2010

I'm replacing a non-hydronic electric baseboard heating unit with a Fahrenheat hydronic one. My old unit was 240v using 2 conductors plus bare ground wire. The fahrenheat (PLF series) unit's instructions are just a bit vague. The wires at the end cap are as follows: a) Two wires connected together with a crimped on connector b) A single green insulated wire with wire nut c) A pair of insulated wires (one red and one black) twisted together with a wire nut. The Thermostat is on the wall. The instructions say "Connect power supply to either end of heater by removing wirenut and connecting heater leads individually to supply leads".

Hello. The red and the black are the hot wires. Therefore, connect one of your conductors to the red and the other conductor to the black. Use wirenuts. The bare ground wire should be solidly attached to the new unit's green wire using a wire nut.

I live in up-state NY . What size do I need to heat a 25x12 bedroom? Are 2 - 60" units enough ( electric hydronic ) or can I go smaller Heinz Boedeker

If you have two big ones the advantage is that you can use only one when the requirement is less and use both of them when the temperature is down.
If however both together will not throw much heat specially when the temperature is down.
Use this logic to decide

How do I know if I have 240v when replacing old baseboard heaters

When you turned off the power to the heaters was the breakers a double (2 pole ) one? If so, then yes, it defintely is 240v. There are very few 110v baseboard heaters out there anyway. The best way to check is to have an electric meter and check it out for sure. Actually if you are working on electrical circuits and you do not have an electric meter to check if you have them shut down for sure, you are on dangerous ground. Always be safe and check before working on any circuit.

IS A HYDRONIC ELECTRIC BASEBOARD MORE EFFICENT THEN THE STANDARD ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEATER

I have some confusion about what you are asking......

There is no such thing as "Hydronic Electric Baseboards"......

I am assuming you are referring to the oil filled baseboard heaters. If so....

The same amount of btu's required to heat a space remain the same whether the elements heat a liquid to warm the air or whether they heat the air directly, the same amount of wattage will be consumed. So, their is no more or less efficiency between the two.

If you are referring to "Hydronic Baseboard Heaters" (these baseboards are fed from a boiler with a pump) Then....I will assume that it is a gas boiler. In which case, the gas boiler would be more cost efficient to operate. If it is an electric the same rule applies as above......the cost is the same.
