I would have to agree with the first solution though. Hopefully when you got the timing belt replaced they also replaced the tensioner and idler. These parts should be replaced everytime you get your belt replaced. Look at your timing belt cover-plastic cover behind your drive belts. there may be a sight hole that allows you to look at the belt without removing the cover. if the belt is loose something broke.
If the clatter came from the rear of the vehicle you may have a bad fuel pump as well.
Loud Clatters are not good. Does the engine turn over? If not I'd say the timing belt has broken.
