Dell keyboard model L100 was working yesterday. A colleague unplugged it to use on his computer, as his keyboard got wet and wasn't functioning. He brought back my keyboard and plugged it back in. but now it isn't working. I checked that particular USB port and other things (mouse) do work when plugged in there, so the problem seems to be specifically with the keyboard.
Close down computer and reboot and pray. I mean to close down not reboot, not hibernate, not sleep.
Why? The electronic chips chatter before the operating system boots up. BIOS asks who is here? Any Keyboard, and other internal bits.
For readers... Cold rebooting fixes a multitude of problems with not working. OK, it does not fix everything, but it is a good first try

Select the Operating system
The Category as Chipset

Click on the Intel driver
Download now
File name is R132539.EXE
If this does not work you will be having 2 usb at the back and in the front of the system.IF the back does not work than you need to get a local tech out at your place as it is a problem with the USB controller on the motherboard and that might have to be replced .If it is the front USB (Only if you have them) then there is a cable coming from the USB controller to the fromnt usb ports that cable might have got unplugged for that you need to open the tower. But i would still recommend a local tech.

Hi,
You may try connecting a different usb keyboard to your system. Mostly, some keyboard converted from serial connection to a usb could cause this kind of problem. In some cases also, wireless keyboard and mouse won't work when u turned on your system if the driver is not properly install.
You may also try disconnecting any other usb devices from your computer. Disconnect also your power supply then push and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Plug back in the power cord then connect your keyboard. Turn on your computer. if it doesn't work, i suggest to call your computer manufacturer and check your warranty. This could be an issue with the motherboard of your computer.
Keep me posted.
Thanks.
Jeff

I just had mine fixed by http://www.laptoprescuer.com/ Unfortunately, this is a motherboard problem but they were a little cheaper than the others since they were able to fix the I/O controller (which is the culprit) and not replace the whole motherboard. So with shipping back and forth it still cost me around $250. :( ...but... they did a great job and I'm and running!
