Keyboard not working after being unplugged & used on another comp

Dell keyboard model L100 was working yesterday. A colleague unplugged it to use on his computer, as his keyboard got wet and wasn't functioning. He brought back my keyboard and plugged it back in. but now it isn't working. I checked that particular USB port and other things (mouse) do work when plugged in there, so the problem seems to be specifically with the keyboard.

Close down computer and reboot and pray. I mean to close down not reboot, not hibernate, not sleep.
Why? The electronic chips chatter before the operating system boots up. BIOS asks who is here? Any Keyboard, and other internal bits.

For readers... Cold rebooting fixes a multitude of problems with not working. OK, it does not fix everything, but it is a good first try

SOURCE: my usb ports aren't working at all

try reinstalling the chipset drivers from

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=27&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PLX_GX620&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

Select the Operating system
The Category as Chipset
Importance should be All
Click on the Intel driver
Download now
File name is R132539.EXE

If this does not work you will be having 2 usb at the back and in the front of the system.IF the back does not work than you need to get a local tech out at your place as it is a problem with the USB controller on the motherboard and that might have to be replced .If it is the front USB (Only if you have them) then there is a cable coming from the USB controller to the fromnt usb ports that cable might have got unplugged for that you need to open the tower. But i would still recommend a local tech.

SOURCE: Problem with a dell computer..

Hi,

You may try connecting a different usb keyboard to your system. Mostly, some keyboard converted from serial connection to a usb could cause this kind of problem. In some cases also, wireless keyboard and mouse won't work when u turned on your system if the driver is not properly install.

You may also try disconnecting any other usb devices from your computer. Disconnect also your power supply then push and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Plug back in the power cord then connect your keyboard. Turn on your computer. if it doesn't work, i suggest to call your computer manufacturer and check your warranty. This could be an issue with the motherboard of your computer.

Keep me posted.

Thanks.

SOURCE: keyboard, mouse and usb ports don't work.

I just had mine fixed by http://www.laptoprescuer.com/ Unfortunately, this is a motherboard problem but they were a little cheaper than the others since they were able to fix the I/O controller (which is the culprit) and not replace the whole motherboard. So with shipping back and forth it still cost me around $250. :( ...but... they did a great job and I'm and running!

My keyboard types numbers instead of letters? I have an older Dell computer. The keyboard model number is L100. I hope you can help.

Hello

You should check Your Region and Language settings in your computer's control panel.

From there click on tab 'Keyboard and Languages' and afterwards You'll see a button 'Change keyboard'.

At this part you can add your keyboard layout and it's done. No more numbers!

I spilt a little water on it yesterday! It continued to work fine. But now today, the battery light is off and on flashing even though I have it plugged in and it will not turn on.

1. Unplug the AC adapter.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Disassemble the laptop & clean all internal components.
4. Assemble it back & test it.

When this is done, you should fully disassemble the laptop & thoroughly inspect its inside. Look for any traces of liquid on the circuit boards & on other components. On circuit boards, liquid damage appears in the form of whitish traces. These needs to be wiped off. This can be done using a tooth brush moistened with few drops of hand sanitizer liquid.
Check all internal connectors & make sure that no liquid seeped into them. Dry them if needed.
When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.
If the liquid fell on the keyboard & you found out that the keyboard is no longer working, then you will have to replace the keyboard.

If it still does not work, the motherboard might be damaged & needs to be replaced.
