Red convergance is un-adjustable

Suddenly today our TV went screwy. The red convergance is way off and it won't let me adjust it.

I saw another answer here about replacing convergence IC's and resistors. Is this something a do-it your self'er can do. I have some skill with soldering.

How do you fix convergence on a sony tv?

hello!
If convergence in your TV went out suddenly and severely, there is nothing you can "adjust". That's a parts failure, convergence amplifiers I.C. chip(s) went south. Needs repair! Period! Minor alignments could be done by applying "flash focus" or "manual convergence" off "menu", if available. Some models have "flash" only option. Anyway, make sure there is no large metal structures near the front of TV or large speakers nearby. that could convergence to go out. Try not to play with any adjustments, if severe convergence problem. you won't be able to fix it right and will corrupt memory settings for "flash" option.
thanks,
Alex.

Mitsubishi VS-50609 - Red convergence is way off, suddenly

You have a bad ground on a convergence IC. You will have to carefully pull this board out and resolder the pins. If this does not solve the problem you will have to replace the ICs. I have saved a few of these TVs with just a resolder job. Thanks for asking!

Hey guys I have a pretty interesting one for you. I researched all the convergence issues a few months ago, and new I needed to buy new IC's. I bought the C5AA00000203's from Partstore.com, which were...

Bad IC is my guess...

On anotehr note convergence is a very common failure on Projection TV sets.
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You can see some example photos and find a solution here...

Convergence problem with TV Pojection Sony KDP65WS550

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Red convergence way off

Hello,
I had the same issue as you pretty much exactly and so do others right around this last few weeks so I am thinking that this is a common problem with the product itself.

You can fix this pretty quickly with the link below. I bought it and it resolved the issue.

Red Gun screwy!!

You have a typical convergence problem here that happens on just about every tube type projection TV set ever made. There are two STK IC's that will need to be changed. Best thing to do, if you have any soldering experience on printed circuit boards, would be to get the service manual, locate the convergence amp IC's order the correct parts and not any replacement IC's that cost less the 20 bucks, and change the IC's. If you have no solid state repair experience, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck
