I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 and the built in SD card slot is no longer responding when I insert a card (the light doesn't even blink). I went in to device manager, but don't see the driver. Where do I get the driver, or is there some other fix besides reinstalling it?
I had similar problem on and off for a couple years using 2GB SD cards.
Reader would flake out and would have to disable/enable through Device Manager.
Things REALLY got ugly when started using 4GB SDHC cards - even
had a bluedeath screen.
Anyhow....
Continued research and a little luck FINALLY solved the problem (so far).
My unit is a Compaq CQ50 (running Vista Home Premium SP1) w/Realtek USB2 SD integral card reader.
When reader 'loses its mind' and drops off from Device Manager:
Shut down Windows and power down laptop.
Disconnect AC adapter (if used).
After power down, wait about 5 secs and then hold the power button down for about 5 secs.
(this is some sort of system reset - it won't power up on you while you're doing this).
Reconnect AC adapter (if used).
Power up system normally.
Device manager now shows the reader.
What finally seemed to SOLVE the problem was installing the
latest driver set from Realtek.
As of 2011/02/22, the url I found them at was:
http://218.210.127.131/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=15&PFid=25&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
Alternatively you can just go to www.realtek.com and waddle through their downloads section.
Hope this helps someone - it's been irritating me for some time now!
The HP website is the best place to get the driver, try to reinstall the driver, test the card reader again, if not work check this: the SD card in other reader, the correct connection of the SD card, look inside the reader for dirt or small objects.
Go to this website and you will find the driver for that model
