My 4 year old Nikon Coolpix 5700 that has been very very well taken care of has 2 oddities that are driving me insane.
1) I can't take a picture unless a) I hold the "lock" button on the side of the camera OR b) if I have the menu being displayed onscreen at the time I am shooting
2) The round dial button that navigates menus or moves the picture up and down when viewing it in zoom on lcd sreen.... will not work when pressing it in the "up" direction. Left, right, down, all work but not up. I have to press the down button all the way thru all menus to cycale back around from the beginning if I miss a menu choice
Please someone have this answer!!!???
Had this problem two weeks ago. On the road to recovery, changing the purpose of the function button seems to have helped me - <Menu>, <Set-up1>, <Controls>, <Func.> Change chosen option away from the top one (User Setting). I found the third one down with the flash symbol least confusing. Then <Set> and <Menu> button to escape from the menus.
Having done all this the camera will take pictures again without pressing the lock button. However, I'm not convinced the func. button works as described in the manual. Hope this helps?

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention... I did already reload the firmware. Thanks to ctf1800 for the thought at least.
My coolpix 5700 has the same problem as shaddshadd's with the lock button. I too can take a picture when the menu screen is up or if I'm holding down the lock button. Solutions?
same problem, same solution, camera works; but dial when operated displays iso, then camera will not work until lock button is pressed (which also sets iso)
I can use the buttons to navigate left and down in the menue, but if I want to use them to choose a self timer, it just does not work, nothing happens. I have reseted my camera several times now, still if I push the self timer or the macro mode button when I want to take a picture nothing happens.
