Question about Compaq Inkjet IJ650 Printer

2 Answers

"Printing" fine, but no ink is output.

I have had this IJ650 for a while. It was in storage for about three years with the black and color cartridges in it (oops).

I now have it successfully installed to my Windows XP PC and it responds appropriately to printing jobs - the right amount of paper feeds through and I can hear the printer carriage moving in a rhythm consistent with what should appear on the page.

There is a problem--no ink is put on the paper. I changed out both ink cartridges with no change in behavior. I suspect that the inkjets may have become clogged/damaged during storage with the cartridges installed, but welcome other opinions.

My questions:

(1) If clogged jets is likely my problem, how do I fix it?
(2) If it is something else, what next?
(3) Is this printer as outdated as I suspect?
(4) If so, what is a good new printer that is simple and reliable?

Thank you for your help.

This printer will not print in black. When a black and white page is printed, it comes out in faint and spotty blues and reds. Print head cleaning cycle prints out crisp and bright cyan, blue and yellow bars, but no black. Manual cleaning resolved failure to print yellow.

Try replacing the ink cartridges with new ones. Check to see if the contacts that touch the gold plates on the cartridge are dirty and if they are use rubbing alcohol to clean them. Check ebay for cheap cartridges as the official cartridges are not worth it for a printer this old. If that fails to fix the problem then throw the printer away. With a print speed of 1 ppm color at high quality setting you might as well get a cheap canon printer. Lexmark printers ink cartridges tend to clog easily which is why your compaq (Which is a lexmark in disguise) clogged.

Hope this helps

whenever you print greyscale what actually happen is that the printer mixes the red, blue and yellow to give the output in gray scale. See if you mix red, blue and yellow ink in the right proportion it gives you very close to black. just try to print your greyscale with your black ink finished you will still get the same print quality as when the black has ink in it. Or find a way seal the nuzzle of the black in and print your greyscale. check what results.

Ink cartridge running low will it default small cartridge

It won't default to the small one...I emailed Canon support; this is the response I got.

The reason for the two different black ink tanks is for the different types of printing your unit is capable of. They are not intended as backups to each other. The larger black tank is pigment based, and is primarily used for standard black text printing or output. The smaller black ink tank is dye based like the color inks, and is used for photo and graphics output. They are designed to complement each other, allowing the printer to produce the best possible black text output or photo quality as appropriate.

Black and white not printing correctly, color is fine

If you are not using Epson ink, your printer will do this. Epson printers hate knock-off ink. Always use Epson ink if you want to keep your printer working properly. To solve the problem you are having, try cleaning the ink tubes. Make sure you re-install them properly. Hope this helps. Charlene

Compaq IJ650 ink jet printer will not print color.

Just because it’s new does not mean New Old Stock. Your print head is plugged. No if or buts about it. Contact HP and tell them you situation. If they don’t help you, box it up and take it back. Buy an Epson.
