I called Garmin customer service and they told me to plug the unit into my computer and it would reset itself and all the letters would be restored. I did this and it worked! I realize the usb cable does not come with the Garmin nuvi 250, however you may have a cable that came with a cell phone or a digital camera. My camera cable worked great.
I had the same problem. Almost 5-10 letter were missing. It got worse progressively. I finally installed the software update affter downloading from Garmin website. That solved the problem!

If a nuvi 200 is has an older version of
system software a certain glitch may occur. The device may be missing letters
or have jumbled letters or displaying duplicate letters or strange symbols on
the address screen. To correct this you will need to update the system software
of your nuvi. You can easily do this by using Garmin's WebUpdater program:
After the program has been installed it should run
automatically. If it does not please use the steps below. To run WebUpdater:
From the Start menu,
click All Programs and find the Garmin folder
Click WebUpdater
Connect your nuvi
to an available USB port on your
computer
To search for an
available update, choose NEXT
As the program
automatically finds updates, choose NEXT to load the update. Once the
update is complete, you can search for other updates such as voice
languages, Bluetooth, and Traffic Receiver.
Disconnect the unit to
ensure it powers on.
Take your unit outdoors and keep it in a
stationary position with an open sky view until it reacquires satellites.

It will walk you through the steps and your letters should be back to normal after the update.

Hi,
looks like your touch screen is faulty . it could just be dust / dirt under the edges of the screen. If dust is trapped under the edge , it can effectivly be pressing the screen a little causing letetr to change or dissapear. See if you can get to clean under and around the edges , if the cleanup doesn't work then most likely cause is a faulty touch screen which will need replacing. Good luck.
Hey... I found a USB cable that fit my Nuvi and then downloaded updated system software from Garmin's support site. It included a bug fix for corrupted keyboards. After running the update, it works! My keyboard is all correct again.
