More than likely the TV is in the "retail" mode which intentionally reverts to the "vivid" mode after a short period of time on the other settings, deemed best for retailer display puposes.

Follow the "return to factory settings" instructions found in the operators manual, pg 21 of KDL52S5100. Only the first half of the instructions are needed to put the TV in "home" mode, the 2nd slection to make after "language. After you have slected "home" I do not beleiev you need to any go further into the setup menu.

"Turn the TV on. Press and hold the "^" (up arrow) button on the remote and then push the "Power" button on the TV. Release the "up" arrow."

You should now be back to start, select langauge and home mode and then exit.

You now should be good to go and your picture mode selections should now stay put.

Sony has live tech help "chat" and I would suggest using them if this doesn't get it done - but I'm 99.95% sure this is your fix.

How do I factory rest my Lg led smart tv?

To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. When I change picture settings from my remote why does it revert back to old settings

Main system control memory IC fault. Contact any service technician to replace it. Before replacing this IC; do a reset to this set and check.

When i change the picture settings to my custom selections, it always reverts back to the vivid preset after about 5 minutes.

Most likely you are in "retail" mode which intentionally reverts back to "vivid" which is deemed best for store display purposes.

Go to pg 21 of the manual and follow the first half of the reset instructions. Once you've chosen "home" (after first selecting "langauge") you need not go any deeper into set-up mode, just exit at this point.

Tv pic keeps going to vivid mode and settings. how do i get the picture mode to stay on a setting other then vivid

Yes if the TV is in Showroom mode it will do that. It is to correct for all the would-be button pushers. There is key combination to fix that on my Samsung DLP. I hope to never set and thus have to remove it. I recommend AVSforum.com and for you to find the thread on your model. Vivid is a good word as is showroom to use to search. You might try Google with KDL... and those words to search but the board is better. First check how many responses before reading all, it can run to hundreds of pages and they have their own search engine. Sorry, I could not find it in a medium search, so good luck.
