The accessory drive belt is a serpentine type belt that is driven by the crankshaft pulley
The belt drives the A/C compressor , alternator , power steering pump and water pump . Belt tension is maintained by an automatic belt tensioner .
Removal:
1. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise until accessory drive belt can be removed from pulleys .
2. Remove accessory drive belt .
Installation:
NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves.
1. Install the accessory drive belt around all the pulleys except for the alternator pulley.
2. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise until accessory drive belt can be installed on the alternator pulley .Release spring tension onto accessory drive belt .

The order is as follows (from low to high): white belt, white belt with yellow stripe, yellow belt, yellow belt with green stripe, green belt, green belt with blue stripe, blue belt, blue belt with red stripe, red belt, red belt with black stripe, and black belt.

WARNING Use caution when removing or installing the belt and make sure the tool does not slip from the drive belt tensioner or personal injury or damage to the belt tensioner and the belt may occur.

1. Attach a 15mm socket or wrench to the bolt attaching the tensioner pulley.
2. On all 3.0L (OHV) engines, rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
3. On 3.0L (DOHC) engines, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.

To install:

1. Install the drive belt on all the pulleys except the tensioner pulley.
2. Rotate the belt tensioner as outlined in the removal procedure to relieve belt tension and install the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Make sure the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys. Make sure the spring keeper releases or improper belt tension will occur.

Pop the hood of the car and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram on the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is on top of the fan shroud. The diagram will be a picture of all of the accessory pulleys and how the serpentine belt is routed among the pulleys. This diagram will give you the exact direction for routing the new belt onto the pulleys. If you cannot find a serpentine belt routing diagram, take a notepad and pen and draw out the exact routing diagram of the old belt across the pulleys.

2 Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. It is located below the alternator on the left front side of the engine. The tensioner on the 3.4 liter, 3.5 liter and the 3.9 liter engines will require a 3/8 ratchet to release the belt tensioner. The 3.8 liter engine will require a ratchet and a 15 mm socket for the belt tensioner. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise to loosen and remove the belt from the belt tensioner pulley.

3 Slide the old belt from the belt tensioner pulley. Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull the belt from the engine compartment.

4 Route the new belt across the crankshaft pulley first. The crankshaft pulley is the big pulley on the bottom of the engine in the center. Then route the serpentine belt across the remaining pulleys as directed by the serpentine belt routing diagram. Leave the belt tensioner pulley for last.

5 Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise again to relieve the tension and slide the new belt across the top of the belt tensioner pulley. Release the belt tensioner and the belt will tighten up as the tensioner applies pressure to the belt. Make sure the new belt is properly seated in all the pulleys.

6 Crank the engine and inspect the belt again to make sure that it stays seated in the pulleys.

Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
   
2. Remove the engine splash shield.
   
3. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
   
4. Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
   
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
   
6. Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.
   

To install:

1. Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
   
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
   
3. Install the drive belt to the alternator.
   
4. Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
   
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner
   
6. Install the engine splash shield.
   
7. Lower the vehicle.

Inspection
Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the engine splash shield.
3. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
4. Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
6. Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.

To install:

1. Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
3. Install the drive belt to the alternator.
4. Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner
6. Install the engine splash shield.
7. Lower the vehicle.

Drive Belt Replacement WARNING: IF EQUIPPED, DO NOT ALLOW DRIVE BELT TENSIONER (6B209) TO SNAP BACK AS DAMAGE TO DRIVE BELT TENSIONER OR PERSONAL INJURY COULD RESULT.
NOTE: Minor cracks in the V-grooved portion of the serpentine drive belt (8620) are considered normal and acceptable. If the drive belt has chunks missing from the ribs, the drive belt should be replaced.

NOTE: Conditions requiring drive belt replacement are excessive wear, rib chunk-out, severe glazing, frayed cords or other conditions. Replace any drive belt exhibiting any of these conditions.

   Using a 15 mm socket or wrench on bolt attaching drive belt tensioner pulley, rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise on 3.0L (2V) and 3.0L (2V) FF, rotate the drive belt tensioner counter clockwise on 3.0L (4V) to remove drive belt from pulleys. Make sure spring keeper engages into slot.

Removal

1. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 04-04.
   

1. Remove the inner fender splash shield.
   

1. Remove the alternator shield.
   

1. WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING DRIVE BELT TO MAKE SURE WRENCH DOES NOT SLIP FROMDRIVE BELT TENSIONER OR POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE TO DRIVE BELT TENSIONER AND DRIVE BELT MAY OCCUR.
   Using a 3/8 inch ratchet on the lifting lug, rotate drive belt tensioner counterclockwise (upward) and engage spring keeper. Remove drive belt from drive belt tensioner.
   

1. Lower vehicle.
   

1. Remove drive belt.
   

Installation

1. Install drive belt over all pulleys (except drive belt tensioner ).
   

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
   

1. Rotate drive belt tensioner , as described under Removal procedure and install drive belt over drive belt tensioner pulley. Make sure all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys. Make sure the spring keeper is released or improper belt tension will occur.
   

1. Install the alternator shield.

   Rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise by hand and remove drive belt from drive belt tensioner .

Installation

1. Position drive belt onto water pump drive pulley and water pump pulley.
   

1. Rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise by hand and install drive belt over top of drive belt tensioner pulley. Make sure all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys.

Disconnect cleaner from electrical outlet. WARNING: Agitator brush roll can start suddenly. Unplug cleaner before turning it over. Replacing Flat Belt Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is facing up. Remove the 6 screws as shown with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift off bottom plate. Replace belt if it is stretched, cut or broken. To check the flat belt. Removing Bottom Plate Removing Belt Positioning Belt Remove used belt from large pulley and discard. Reposition bottom plate and 6 Phillips head screws. Tighten screws securely. Insert agitator brush roll through belt and position belt in groove (A) on agitator brush roll. Inspecting V-Belt The V-belt is designed to last for a long time and is not normally replaced. However, if the V-belt is cracked, gouged or broken, it should be replaced. Slide flat belt off large pulley. To remove V-belt, slide back of belt over pulley (A). Then firmly pull on belt and “snap” it out. Discard used belt. To install new belt (with lettering on outside of belt), slide back of belt over pulley and pull front of belt toward groove next to pulley. Belt will “pop” into place.
