You need to connect your incoming signal to the DVD recorder first. So either put your aerial lead (or cable as the case may be), into the aerial input socket at the rear of the DVD. Then you will need to go into the tuning mode on the DVD & tune in your stations. If you are on cable with a scart, then just connect the scart from the cable box to the DVD & select the input source (ie AV1), this will allow you to record

Trying to get the VCR/DVD recorder to record shows from direct tv using HDMI

You can not use HDMI to connect to a recorder due to blu-ray rules of no high quality recording being allowed. The only way to record off of Direct TV is to use audio and video cables (red, white and yellow. You also may need something like a videostabiizer etc. to do the job. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!!!

No sound playing dvd recorder or hard disk recording or freeview

It is possible as when the jack is used with a plug into it, it is designed to cut the sound to the speakers in the set.

You have probably found out now that you would need to get your digital reception by connecting a set top box to the LG, say to AV1, then select AV1 when making a recording.

Can i hook up a hdmi cable from computer to dvd recorder and record stuff from computer to dvd recorder

Hi,
The HDMI port on your pc is an output device. That said, if your dvd recorder has an HDMI input or another input device then you can record from your pc to your dvd recorder. To do this, you will need the HDMI to A/V or anyother cable that your dvd recorder accepts as an input device. Another roundabout method would be to connect your computer to the TV which is probably already connected to your DVR for recording and record via that.
If you send your DVD recorder's model no. i can help you with exact instructions

Dvd recorder

It is the signal that is digital not the TV, does your TV have a scart connection on the back? (a 2 rowed 21 pin female connection point).
That is the best way you can connect your DVD Rec. to it. The digital ready is just going to be DVB or something similar, which is just a form of digital freeview. Dont be conned by salesmen into buying a new TV with the DVD, as long as your TV was bought in the last decade or so it will have scart. If not you should just loop the RF out from the video into the DVD then out the DVD into the TV. But if you want to record from video to DVD you will have to connect the two by scart lead.

Low volume on playback

The volume control on the TV does not affect the recording. However, if you were recording from a set top box, and you turned the volume down on the box and not the TV, then this would cause the problem you describe.

If this is the case, then try to keep the STB volume at maximum and only use the TV volume control.

Also, some DVD players and VCRs have a lower output than the standard TV tuner, so an increase in volume is usually needed.

You might want to try some test recordings to see what happens.

Sony SLV-D350P DVD/Video cassette Player

I have the manual. Are you trying to record something live? if so:

1) Turn on both the DVD/VCR and your TV.
2) Switch the input selector on your TV so that the signal from the player appears on the TV screen (this is usually something like 'input 1' or 'line 1' and so forth)
3) On your remote, set TV/DVD-VIDEO to DVD-Video, then press SELECT VIDEO to control the VCR. These buttons are at the upper left hand corner of the remote controller.
4) To record from a cable box, turn it on.
5) make sure the tape is longer than the total recording time.
6) insert a tape into the VCR.
7) press CH +/- on the remote to select the channel or line input video source to record.
8) select the tape speed SP/EP (SP provides better quality, EP provides three times the recording time as SP)
9) Press the record button to start recording. The VCR display will display the message REC.
