Question about Toshiba 50H72 50" Rear Projection Television

Accessing convergence in menu

I noticed on the left side of screen you can see double letters when writing is on that side of screen. Tried going to the menu and then convergence and it shows to access that function to press left or right arrow,I do that and nothing happens, I have left the tv on for about 45min prior to trying to converge it. Need to know if it is the ic or resistors and one more thing where is a good place to get a service manual for this tv, toshiba 50h72. Thanks in advance.

Thank for you help, but i have not tried to repair it yet just got the tv from a friend who did not need it no more and was playing games on it and noticed the writing on the left side looked doubled, so I started looking on the net to find a problem and I think it has to do with the convergence but not sure. So I tried to do a convergence through the menu and when i goto convergence in the menu and try to activate with the left or right arrows nothing happens, need to know how to access it or is there another way to reset convergence, also no remote with tv. Thanks

so you are saying that the tv is in some type of protection the reason it will not go into the convergence menu?

  • ellite Feb 03, 2008

so all of these possibilities would not allow me to access the convergence in the main menu? Ill try to get a pic of it! Thanks again for all of you guys help.

I just had my Hyper board repaired on my Toshiba 50H72, now the convergence seems to have gone out (I get double picture based on colors....esp green). How do I fix or is there someone in the Naperville area that can fix?

That is a TA0262 chassis and from what you're describing it could be a one of two things. A picture would speak volumes if you can send one...
If it's convergence you should be able to replace the amps, check and/or replace a couple of pico fuses and resistors and you're good to go. But from what you're explaining and what djnick was understanding the problem to be it sounds a bit like what techs call piecrusting - affecing only the outer edge(s) of the picture. If so, it's likely the hyper module Toshiba p/n# 23148024 and more specifically the grouping of caps on that module that have failed. More specifically 11 caps all 10mf/16v at the following pos#'s:

They're an smd cap and most of us simply replace them with miniatures and just clip the leads to fit.. Or you could just pull the board and send it ti a reputable shop and have it done, not an expensive job...
Either way if you have a pic it would be most helpful...

Protection mode means there is excessive current being drawn from some section of the tv. Power supply and deflection amps and convergence system are the biggest culprits but there are other causes, as well.

The foldover indication is a clear sign of a vertical deflection problem. The burn marks may mean there is a power supply meltdown caused by excessive current drawn. There could also be a horizontal meltdown going on. Temporarily lift the B+ line feeding the HOT/HV section and see if that prevents it from going into protection.

Check your soldering and other connections to make sure you did not execute a short when doing the work. If it did not go into protection before the vertical IC was changed it should not after - unless something was introduced that caused the excessive current.

Here are some general ideas that may help:

Samsung HCN4727W Rear Projection TV, green screen, audio works

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai2_bing.gif,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Red color in left bottom of screen and left side has 3d look. letters on guide in this area are concaved also

try to do a convergence adjustment. If that doesnt work the convergence power supply board is the usual culprit, if the convergence option hasnt disapeared from the menu.

You need to use the convergence feature for your set. What this is is having the three color guns aligned properly, There is hopefully an automatic adjustment on your set-up menu, if not adjustments for each seperate gun. Basically you adjust the lines of the adjustment screen so the line turns black and white. You can easily see what needs it.

If this needs to be done manually, it is a chore. Contact me for directions how to do this. It is best left to a pro but this can get costly and wouldn't hurt if you tried yourself as if someone comes in, the cost would be the same whether it is out slightly or severely.

I am having a shadow/double image problem only on the left side of the screen

Yes its called the Convergence ICs there are two of them they are mounted on a huge heat sink with the part number stamped on them they will have a STK number such as STK392-110. they have 16 pins on them there are two cost around 10 dollars each, you will also need some Heat sink Compound. Just look for the largest heat sink in your tv and thats where they will be. However if you can move both red and blue colors up,down right and left its probaly not your ICs. Do the colors move in all directions? If so you probaly just need to do a multipoint convergence adjustment.via of the service menu. Hope this helps. let me know if you need anything further.

Red convergence is out of alignment

If the mis-convergence is only noticable on the left center and the top and bottom left side of the screen is good, then it sounds more like a pincushion distortion problem rather than a convergence one. Otherwise, you could have a bad pair of convergence IC's or capacitors / solder connection problems. I would doubt that adjusting the service menu would correct this problem, and you could make it much worse by trying. Better have a technican work on it if the picture quality is still good otherwise.
