I have an emachine that is 5 years old. Always worked perfectly until recently when Windows didn't want to shut down and then after Christmas the power button will not power the unit up. Can you help me?

YOUR PSU (POWER SUPPLY UNIT) MAYBE THE CULPRIT. If the power to your cable which fits the computer is ok, then the supply unit is usually at fault. You can buy these pretty cheaply on ebay and they are very easy to fit, or if you are not into that find a mate who can! beleive me... its pretty easy.

Guys listen to me, I recently found a site that sells cheap product keys for windows 7, the price is incredibly low so I've bought one for try, until now it works perfectly! The link is https://plus.google.com/103156713044838092165/posts/gque7ErHCVY, you can also have a try.
The inverter board that controls the lighting on the screen is dying. since its a 5 year old monitor and only a 17 inch. the cost to repair is greater than the cost of buying a new one. unless you know how to replace the part yourself. I think its best to just buy a new monitor
try doing a system restore and check if it works fine note:- if you do a system restore all the recent applications will be lost and you will have to install it again.
Try first of all 'Last good configuration' If still no go consider what it is you have done latly in termso of installing new software or a new hardware device. Remove the most recent. Finally in Safe Mode go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore and reset the machine to a time before the problem started.
