Direction of scroll while navigating

You did not mention which gps systems do you have. Anyway giving you details of tom-tom gps language change instructions.

Change the language settings on your TomTom GPS device. If your TomTom GPS receiver is set to the wrong language, change the current language to the language of your choice. Perform a reset on the device as described in Step 1. When your GPS unit turns back on, tap the button in the lower right corner of the screen to continue. Tap the next screen to access the GPS receiver's main menu. Tap on the wrench icon to access the "Change Preferences" setting screen. Scroll through the "Change Preferences" screens until you see the "Change Language" icon, identified by three flags. Tap the "Change Language" icon and choose your desired language from the list. Depending on which language you chose, you may be asked to choose a new voice for turn-by-turn navigation.

For Garmin device:-

Try this below

Touch the Wrench icon which is located on the screen with the Magnifying Glass and Map icon
Touch the Wrench icon
Touch the down arrow
Touch the Lips/Mouth icon
Touch the top right blue box
Touch the up arrow until you see American English
Touch American English
Touch OK
This should now be in English.

Go to Tools.... Settings....Navigation.....under Route Preference set it to Faster Time if you need to change it just press to Shorter Distance or Off Road.... if you change it make sure you press OK n bottom screen

Avoidances.....should be Enabled......press it....make sure Highway is Not checked... if you make changes here also press Ok on bottom screen

I only keep checked U-turns ...Traffic...Car Pool ...Unpaved roads

Before you travel, add your route to the GPS, do a trial run from home and see which direction it is taking you by pressing the turn arrows
If that isnt the way you want to go, on the map screen press menu then press detour, this will take you in another direction again scroll down the turns and see the route

press the top part of the screen, now click the icon next to the arrow on the bottom line which is change preferences, then click the blue arrow three times and then click on the icon next to the arrow on the bottom line which is change languages, sorted.

There are many options that do not require a full address for 'Navigate to':
1) Address -> Crossing or Intersection
2) Scroll right Arrow -> Point on Map
3) Scroll right Arrow -> Latitude Longitude

Tap Change preferences in the Main Menu.

(When you first start using your TomTom ONE XL, not all the buttons will be shown in the menu. Many buttons and some more advanced features are hidden because you will not need these features very often.To see all of the buttons and features, tap "Show ALL menu options" button in the Preference menu.)

then Tap "Turn off map display" button to turn off the map. Instead of seeing your position on a map in the Driving View, you will only see information about the next instruction.

Click on Settings

Click on Map Info tab at bottom

Make sure the map info is checked, if it isn't you won't get any POI.

Are you sure the volume was up? There is a scroll wheel on the top right side of the unit (as you face it). Make sure it is turned all the way up towards the top of the GPS. You should see yellow bars in the right of the unit indicating the volume level. Also, when you turn the unit on, there is a button on the bottom right that looks like a wrench. Tap this, then press the down arrow on the bottom right. You will see an icon that says, "Volume." Tap it, then check that the "Navigation" volume level is where you want it to be (normally 100%, but that is up to you).

not sure if you are keeping the tab open but...the reason is because the tab at the top of the GPS is the antannae. You have to open it or it won't work. when you press the reset button, you are opening the antannae first which then acquires the satellites. Keep the top tab open.

for those in the States at least, the economics. Many new vehicles here come with GPS and mapping options today for a nominal amount. I was also looking at this Garmin portable. I am not familiar with what is available in Europe though, I know the cellular technology is far ahead of the States. I just thought I would throw this out there. Good luck with your efforts.
