I have anHP Compaq Presario SR1230NX desktop. The fan inside the power supply unit is making noise. I opened it and cleaned it but it still makes noise. How can I resolve this problem? Do I have to buy a new PSU or can I replace the fan only?

Suggest you change out the power supply if this indeed is the fan noise.

Why?

1) Because it may not be a cracked mount for the fan casing. It could be the fan bearings are bad, allowing the fan blade center hub, to rub.
This would mean the fan is on it's way out, and you sure don't want a PSU without a fan!
(Will burn up in a matter of hours)

2) It is Not advisable to open up a PSU!

Inside are Electrolytic Capacitors. They are used in the Input stage as Filters for the incoming AC electricity.

They are used in the Output stage for the rectified DC electricity the power supply rectifier bridge converted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply

Even after unplugged from power, Electrolytic Capacitors can hold a charge for Weeks, sometimes Months!

If your fingers create a circuit path with the terminals of any capacitor, the stored charge could be released to YOU!

If your fingers complete a circuit that one, or more capacitors are in, the stored charge could be released to YOU!

Bad shock to Fatal!

Replacement is the best advice.
Be safe, Live long.

[Your PSU is an ATX style of PSU.
90% of personal computers out there, use this style of PSU.
It is a common style.

I have worked on a few compaq presarios and have found the fans have a nasty habit of cracking on one corner(the casing) which hangs on by a thread but the fan touches the side. Are you sure its the psu fan and not a separate fan making the noise. As always if you open your unit it is always your own reponsibilty of what occurrs afterwards. Pc's are very temporamental. i had success repairing a fan casing on a machine like yours. I opened the tower as per its instructions, located the fan, releasd the screws, reseated the fan and glued the fan casing where it had cracked, repaired it, and once dry, reseat and screw back in place. You can replace a separate fan unit if you can get a spare part, i would think the psu is an all in one unit though. Its not hard to repair at all if the fan is separate. I saved the lady in question getting a new part as all that was wrong was her fan casing had cracked. You will want to repair asap as a fan that is not working correctly may overheat a pc. I hope this helps a bit.

Your computer is not POSTing, the best solution is to get warranty support on it.

The other option is to take it to a computer technician and he/she will diagnose the faulty component. They have access to many computer components and can determine the fault by a process of elimination.

Sounds like the fan is going out, makes a bearing type of sound. comes and goes

Check if its clogged up with hair. This is a common problem with computers. Get the hoover pipe on it.

I turn on the power of my computer and it shows the compaq name then goes to a resume windows that is highlighted and when you click on it the screen goes black and the computer does not load

I suggest you have Power Supply problems. A failing power supply will emulate all kinds of software problems.

Let's start with the easy stuff first.

How dirty is the computer inside, and the Power Supply? Has the inside of the computer, and the Power Supply, been cleaned on a regular basis?

(Computer off, and unplugged from power, computer case open. A can of compressed air is used to clean)

From there I would suggest testing the Power Supply, (Requires a multimeter, or a power supply tester), or replace the power supply with a known to be good unit, for a test.

To summarize:

Let me know if the computer is dirty inside, and if you need guidance on how to clean it. (Power Supply also)

From there, if you wish I can guide you on testing your power supply, or replacing with a known to be good unit, for a test.
Simply state in a Comment.

This is HP Support, and the download page for a manual which instructs on how to open your computer case, (Page 118)

With this manual I can also guide you in replacing the power supply.

Why do I think it's a power supply issue?

You don't have enough power to turn the Processor on.
Power Supply's are rated in Wattage.
Voltage times Amperage = Wattage.

1) ALL the lights require less than 1 Watt of power.
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.
3) A typical Processor requires 51 to 125 Watts of power. Depends on what processor it is.

The Compaq Presario S4020WM Desktop PC, comes with an AMD Athlon XP 2400 processor. (2.4GHz)
When operating at full capacity, this processor can use up to 68.3 Watts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_XP_microprocessors

You have enough power to turn on lights, and spin fans, but not enough to turn the Processor on.

Flashing green light next to the power supply -_-

If the clicking sound is coming directly from the power supply, it could mean any number of things, including a faulty power supply.

If you can open the case cover, check inside for dust buildup. (Note: Make sure the computer is unplugged from the AC power source before doing this!) Try using canned air to blow dust buildup off any heat sinks and fan assemblies you see inside the computer, this includes the power supply as well. A good, general dusting of the backs of drives is also a good idea. Do not tilt or invert the canned air while you are using it, or propellant could be sprayed onto the components!

After cleaning out the PC, put the cover back on, plug the unit in and see if there's any improvement. If not, without testing individual components it would be difficult to troubleshoot your problem. A trained service technician's physical assessment would be a solid next step.

Sounds like the Power Supply is bad likes its not able to power on itself. Best thing to do, try a different known good power supply and attach it to the motherboard, if you get the same symptom with the machine not powering on then its a bad motherboard. If the machine does power on then you know your original power supply is bad.

Desktop Fan "surges" in and out.

Chazzl,

Probably the desktop fan, a quick way to test for sure is to stop the fan with you finger when it is making the noise.

Just place your finger lightly in the middle of the fan and check if the noise stops.
Dont leave your finger there for more than a couple of seconds and mind the blades as it does smart a bit if you catch them.

Good luck
