Did you try going thru the setup portion of the owners manual? IF you need the manual you can get it online free. I realize sometimes people read the manuals and don't understand the technical jargon. Let me know if you need further assistance thur chat session and i can possibly step you thru it better in real time. Good luck Guru Jay

How to hook up to panasonic tv & sony dvd player

DVD output (HDMI) to HDMI input on TV will transfer both audio and video from DVD to TV. Audio output on TV to unused Input on Yamaha receiver (Aux, CD, etc.). This hookup will allow DVD and TV channels audio playback through your Yamaha receiver. Remember to test any/all new hookups or connections using minimum settings (volume, etc.), and bring up levels slowly for the initial testing.

Should I be using a separate optical cable when connecting a Blu ray player with and HDMI ?

hi,
There is no need of connecting optical cable. the only thing you have to do is set the digital input assignment as HDMI (means setting the digital input source HDMI) in your av receiver. Also remember one thing, set the digital output setup of ur blue ray player also as HDMI. then only u will get audio through HDMI
if you need any more assistance fell free to contact me through fixya.

I have a yamaha receiver with HDMI outputs for direct tv, and a DVD player. How do I hook up the direct tv, HD DVD, and yamaha receiver? Where do the inputs go?

Does the Yamaha have HDMI inputs? Usually you would connect the directv and dvd player via individual HDMI cables to the Yamaha (input)and then the Yamaha (output) to your TV also via HDMI.

Hooking up multiple components to HTR 6030

Once you have installed all the cables to the system, you will need to go in to the Yamaha's system settings (see owner's manual) and assign the audio inputs accordingly. The DVD input will need to be set to the optical input # you have selected. Optical and digital coax are not preset in most cases. Once you get to the input selection assign the digital # for DVD and then exit out. You should begin to hear the audio immediately. If not you missed a step. I do this for a living and every unit has its own routine you need to learn.  Enjoy the system Rob

How to hook up everything!

I have similar equipment.

You should use an audio digital cable to connect the bluray to the Yamaha receiver and another digital audio cable to connect the HD box to the Yamaha receiver.

Hope this helps.

Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver

Is Yamaha HTR-640 a receiver? Try HDMI from PS3 to receiver or Sony HDTV. If HDMI from PS3 to receiver the you need and HDMI from receiver to out Sony HDTV. You could connect everything to receiver and HDMI out to HDTV. You can not have an HDMI cable AND an optical cable coming out of the PS3, only one or the other.
