No experience with this issue, but in your shoes I would check the satellite antenna connection into the back of the unit. From there, I would chase the wire and make sure it is not frayed. If that does not resolve or lead to a resolution of the issue, borrow an XM antenna and see if it will work then. If not, then something has happened internally with the head unit, most likely at the antenna connection jack.

To receive XM weather or audio, the GPSMAP 740s requires a GXM 40 Smart Antenna with XM subscription.
The GXM 40 Smart Antenna (010-00730-00) is used to receive weather and audio service from XM satellite radio. For details on XM services please visit our XM webpage.
Once a GXM 40 Smart Antenna has been connected to the GPSMAP 640, the device can display the subscription information for the antenna.

Well, wire wasn't frayed nor crooked. Checked connection for XM..seemed fine..a few other wires/connections came undone in the process. And voila! With no known good reason, it's fixed and operational again!
Thanks for giving us the courage to try a few things before trying to figure out who could fix this for us. At this point, consider it "fixed"..accidentally?
