It would look like this if your UMD door was off.
You should open the UMD door and carefully manually move the laser to the right side of the assembly.
Use a sharp THIN probe to manually move the WHITE gear under the metal housing. It is quite hard to see it in the photos so I put a red star around it.
I usually try and scrape the gears themselves to make sure there is no gunk or debris in the gear.
After this try and see if it is reading UMD again.
This fixes it about 35% of the time.
If none of this is working, it is time to open your PSP unit Or send it in for repair.

Hi Tubston1980,
What we have here, is a failure to read the UMD. Troubleshooting 101, open the UMD door and depress the little black spur sticking up about 1/8" and it is about 3/4" in and to the left. Once your depress the Black spur, You should see the the little disc motor spin and the laser beam light up. Do not stare into the laser. This tells you that at least the laser is lighting and the motor is turning, Now, get a Q-tip and dampen it with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Rub the lens with the dampened q-tip. Use the dry end of the Q-tip to dry the lens. Look carefully to see if any lint or foriegn obsjects are inside the UMD disc drive. If you see anything, get it out. Look at the white gear in that back to see if anything is on it. Clean it if necessary, I know its very close quarters and hard to do.
I repair PSP's with this problem that do not get fixed after cleaning. I can replace your UMD drive with a full brand new drive for $47 which includes Return shipping. Contact me at [email protected] if you need further assitance.
