The DVD drive in my wife's Compaq Evo N600C has stopped reading CDs. It reads DVDs fine, but doesn't recognize any CD or CD-R.

Since the problem first appeared, she has installed several software downloads, and I recently upgraded the machine from Win 98SE to Win XP (I had to make a backup copy of the install CD on DVD media to manage that!), but that didn't solve the problem. Checking under Start >Control Panel > System >Hardware >Device Manager shows no yellow triangle and indicates the DVD drive is working properly. I've tried using TWO CD lens cleaners, to no avail - the machine still reads DVDs but no CDs.

I don't think we have, yet, but I don't see the relevance, since we're not having problems with DVDs, and the problem started when she had 98SE on the machine

The UpperFilters and LowerFilters strings are not present under that registry item, nor does the file PxHelp20.sys exist on the computer. I ran the HP/Compaq diagnostics; the CD drive tests work fine when there's a DVD in the system, but with a CD they report no media present.
System ROM has been updated to the latest available version, also.

You may well be right. Today I did a search on the specific rebadged Toshiba drive model with the result that it is a known problem with the particular model - and a suggested cure has been posted elsewhere on this site, involving tweaking an internal potentiometer on the drive. Since replacing the drive is impractical at this time, I'll give that a try.

Tweaking the pot controlling the CD read "eye" did the trick. CDs are now being detected and read properly.

This turned out to be a hardware issue - the sensitivity of the CD detector needed adjustment.

Did you download and install the WinDVD Player Version 1.4, 2.4, or 3.0. update for customers who have upgraded one of the Compaq EVO notebook models to Windows XP?http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...

Have you installed any new software lately? If yes, what was installed? Have you changed or upgraded operating systems? Go to Start >Control Panel > System >Device Manager. Look to see if there are any yellow triangles.

If your winXP check your registry under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

if there is a string labeled either UpperFilters or LowerFilters.
If either of these mention "PxHelp20.sys" remove it. You should see
    results almost instantly.

Another way to look for this is to go into device manager and look
at the properties for the drive in question. In the driver tab see if
    that file is mentioned.

If you have vista it might be the same, but if not try running a search in your registry for this file.

cd drives have 2 different eyes one for the dvd and 1 for cd,im guessing that your cd is not being picked up by the cd palyer. because theoptical eye for cd is not working i would try another cd/dvd player..ive seen this many times and it usually ends up being the cd eye has malfunctioned.

Can operate with CD ROM's. Won't recognize DVD's.

Sounds like the drive could be going bad. The way the laser reads DVDs vs. CDs is different, that is why you are able to read one, not the other. I had this happen to me, except the opposite. It could read DVDs, not CDs. Had to buy a new one, and all is well.

Suddenly stopped reading cds but reads dvds

Could be a bad drive, as DVD lasers are a little different than just CD lasers. The laser may be bad for one, but the other can work. I had this issue, had to buy a new drive.

Dvd rom not reading cds/dvds

I had similar problem on a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop, I simply had to reconnect DVD drive. It usually loosing it's connection with motherboard and drive is visible in My Computer but it doesn't recognize any discs. If reconnection does not solve your issue you may try to update your DVD firmware and if it won't help replace DVD drive. Good Luck!

Not reading DVD

It's common problem with combo drives in notebooks, they don't seem to last long. Try this:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. If the problem persists the laser is faulty in the drive and the drive will need to be replaced.
