If it makes this noise in the agitate mode and not during the spin cycle, I would suspect that the transmission is going.

How do I fix a ge top load washer that's making a loud banging noise while agitating?

There is either a balance issue or a damaged spring. Usually all you need to do is open the washer (make sure it is OFF) wait for it to stop spinning... then look for clothes bunching up on one side. Take some out ad move them around.
Sometimes putting in to many or too few items will make it harder to resolve. Items like large towels or several towels, sheets and such will hold more water and be heavy until the water starts to pull out.

My GE wjre5550h1ww waher makes a continuos loud clank/bang noise when time the washer is in the soak/agitator cycle. Rinse and spine cycle, normal noise/sound. Please help! Thanks

The part (it has three prongs) that the transmission (yes your washing machine has a transmission) uses to cause the reciprocating motion of agitation has broken off 1 or 2 of the 3 prongs, and, if you
continue to use the washer (you might as well, the part is broken already - you may as well run it until it dies), the part will break completely, and you'll lose the soak/agitator cycle altogether.
FIX: replace the broken 3-prong plate, and give it a nice coating of automotive bearing grease to help it last for awhile (until the next thing breaks).

Loud banging noise during rinse

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the rinse or spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary. This will solve your problem.

Loud banging noise during washing cycle. Sounds like agitator is slipping, then banging. No noise during spinning cycles.

Grab the agitator at the base and attempt to rotate it clockwise and counter clock wise. It should remain firmly in place. If there is movement the agitator spline is worn.

This is your Agitator:

It does not come with the fabric dispenser. It has to be ordered seperately. You should be able to transfer you old one to the new one if you do have to replace the agitator.

Besides the agitator the drive bell can also be the source of the noise. It is located under the agitator.

This part is the most likely cause of the noise.

Spinning cycle

When it is spinning, there is no agitation. Why? there is 1 motor with 2 directions to provide sinning and agitation by 2 different mechanisms. The sound from spinning, and rinsing could be some worn out parts from the mechanism need to be inspected and replaced accordingly such as the pulley, the clutch, the brake and 8 springs from bottom tube hung to the chassis to keep the tube balance under the load. Hope this can help.

Loud noise while agitating in wash cycle

If you begin dissassembly from the tub down, you wil come to the transmission with the spindle sticking out of it. If you undo the bendable tabs all around the transmission it comes apart in two halves. Careful, its full of oil. The spindle has a plastic gear bolted to the bottom of it. It meshes with other gears in the tranny. It has sheered teath and is making the noise.
