Here's how I did it. The plastic sleeve broke off at the base. I used a Dremel cutting disc to cut off the flange. You could probably use a screwdriver to pry it off as well. The sleeve has a brass fitting that can be pried out with a screwdriver by sticking the screwdriver blade into the space and prying gently upward. Work around the fitting prying upward, and voila, it will slip off. I chewed up the plastic a little, but you can't see it once the new sleeve goes on. Install the new sleeve by placing it over the motor shaft and gently tapping it down with a hammer until it is firmly seated. By the way, the customer service at Cuisinart was first rate. Sent me the new sleeve without charge of any kind even though my machine is 30 years old.

Many people have had this problem. When I called Cuisinart, they said, oh sure we will send you the part and instructions. When I called because there were no instructions, I got another story about how I needed to send it back because that repair is only made at the warehouse. I have found other places online where people just chip and pick at the plastic until it comes off. Short of sending it back and paying the shipping I don't know what else to say. My husband is chipping and picking as we speak.

Cracked plastic sheath on the motor drive shaft

The shaft is spinning inside the sleeve. So is should not be hard to remove. With a DLC-7SP, I grabbed the spindle with some pliers, channel locks might do well and put a handle of a screwdriver between the pliers and the top deck and pried. Second attempt and it pulled up easily. Place the screwdriver beside one of the top deck screw covers to transfer force directly to the motor. Otherwise top deck would probably break.

Clean the old shaft to remove any contamination.

New one can be driven on with a hammer and block of wood.

Locked in blade

My old Cuisinart has this problem because the motor shaft and the corresponding socket on the cutter are worn. The shaft has jammed in the cutter. To un-jam it, stick a bar of wood behind one blade of the cutter (I use the wood handle of my dough whisk) and give it a light, sharp tap with a hammer. Check after every tap to see if it is loose, if not do it again. You want to tap against the back side of the cutter, not the cutting edge side. The socket on your cutter may be cracked, allowing it to open up and slip (and jam) under the stress of cutting. You'll probably need a new one. If the motor shaft is also worn, that can also be replaced. The new part is about $10. I got a few more months of life from my cutter by reinforcing the inner socket with a thin plastic tube from the barrel of a syringe.

Cuisinart DLC-8 Plus Motor Shaft Cover broken.

I had the same problem: Cuisinart sent a "replacement" sheath for my DLC-8E which turned out to be the wrong one. When I replaced mine, which was cracked, none of my blades would fit over the new sheath! I "solved" the problem by purchasing a new DLC-8E motor base on Ebay for only $9.99!

Installing Cuisinart Sleeve/Sheath for DLC -7EMotor Shaft Cover

I have a DLC 7 pro circa 1982 - just replaced the sheath. First - remove old sheath - I found that using a plumbers pipe cutter to cut old sheath off in sections then pulling each section off with pliers works great. Make sure ALL the plastic comes off the metal shaft - as well as the brass ring portion of the sheath.

Next use a sharpie marker to mark the the "flat" side of the shealth = you must look inside the sheath, find the 2 "nubs" that form a "flat" side. These nubs must line up perfectly with the flat side of the shaft - mark the base of the shaft as well so you can more easily line up the flat of the sheath with the flat side of the shaft (and no, the flat outer sides of the the sheath do not match up with the flat inside section of the sheath - that would make life too easy!)

Press the new sheath on with your hand as far as it goes - should go down to about 1 inch from the base.

Now you need a hammer, piece of 2 x4 wood and brute strenght! (keep in mind that once you hammer it - even once - it will NOT come off) Put the 2" side of the wood against the top of the sheath - Use a LOT of force to hammer the sheath all the way down. will probably take 3 - 5 good strikes. It will take much more force than you think you should need to use. Make sure the base of shaft is as far down as possible - if it rubs against the workbowl while spinning it will fuse to the bowl! Good luck! -

I have ordered a replacement stem for my DLC-7, the stationary stem that covers the motor shaft. I'm not sure how to remove the one currently on the unit.

Remove the pusher sleeve and lid from the work bowl first, then slide the work bowl out of the locked position. At this point, the stem should be exposed.

Go to the cuisinart website and you can buy replacement parts. You will have to buy the entire shaft not just the top but it is still good!
