Wireless internet connection

Hi, can't connect to the internet with my laptop Win Vista . It shows connected to internet but when try to connect nothing happens. I see that shows "local connection" only and no "local and internet". If I go through my neighbor I connect inmediately and my laptop shows "local and internect connection". Can this be related to my Win XP desktop modem which is aprox 3 yrs old? My high speed cable connection is through my XP pc and I am using a Linksys router to try to connect via wireless to my newer laptop. Please help. Thanks

I may be able to help with this...but I need a detailed description of how you have things connected between the XP desktop, the cable, modem, the Linksys router, and the laptop. Also, is the Linksys router new?

Typically, the wan port on the wireless router connects directly to the cable modem with a cat5 network cable....then the desktop pc connects to the router...on port 1 for example...with a similar cable. Once the wireless router is set up properly, the laptop should then be able to connect using wireless.

If it still not getting connected then change the security settings on your router to 64bit WEP... (Initially it will be in WPA)
disabled the WPS (wifi protected setup) in the router...

I have an active internet connection. in fact, my pc works with this connection.. i tried to connect my laptop to the internet, but it didn't prompt as it usually do..it used to show the sharing icon on...

hard to answer your question without knowing what Operating System you have on your PC and laptops connections, eg. LAN, wireless etc.

If you have windows XP you will need to check Network Connections on your laptop to make sure the Internet connection is showing as connected.

Click on Start - Control Panel -- network connections.

Check if Internet gateway is setup

If not go to Internet Options in Control Panel and setup the Internet connection using the right buttons.

I cannot guide you if you have Vista or Win 7.

Wireless Router

Hi Sleepey,

I'm sorry to inform you that computers running Windows 98 or earlier cannot share a wireless network created on a computer running XP or Vista - I've tried it. The only way to get internet access on your Win 98 PC is to wire it to the router with an ethernet cable.

Also, make sure that, in Control Panel, your network connection (probably called "1394 Connection") is set to automatically acquire an IP address - here's how:
1) Right-click 1394 Connection and select Properties.
2) On the General Tab, under "This connection uses the following items," select Internet Protocol and click Properties.
3) Verify that the radio button next to Obtain an IP address automatically is checked.

I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any futher assistance.

Kind regards,
H2H

Netgear wireless router DG834PN wireless access local only I can get internet on my desktop which is connected to the router via ethernet but I can connect to the router wirelessly on my laptop but only...

With Vista on the Laptop it should be just a matter of double clicking the router in the network settings, vista should automatically configure the connection.
This has happened to me before and this is what I did just to see if it worked, and it did flawlessly.
