Question about GE Ovens

Oven will not ignite, it is approx. 8 yrs old. 2 years ago the ignitor was changed for a similar problem. Everything works on stove even the broiler. Very dissapointed in the GE profile since I have had all these problems in a short time. My dishwasher went also. Thanks, Jim

Jim your ignitor has gone bad once again.
You can turn off the gas supply,remove the oven racks,remove the oven base pan,remove the flame spreader to access the ignitor.
Place a clamp on amp meter over one wire of the ignitor and turn the control on for bake. If the ignitor does not glow at all. It is bad. If it glows and reads 3 amps or less on the amp meter it is still bad.
A proper functioning ignitor will light and re-light the burner in 45 seconds or less.

There are 2 seperate ignitors on stoves. One for the broiler and one for the oven. Ignitors can be bad even though they glow!

My oven is not working The Broiler works and the stove top works fine but the oven will not heat and when you turn it on no gas comes out I tried turning it on and using a lighter but nothing happens

You gave us good clues in information!-- Thanks!

Most modern gas ovens have a device called a Glow Ignitor to light the burner.
If this ignitor has filed, it will NOT left the gas valve open-- (Good thing, right? :-) )

You say the broiler lights fine-- so let's observe something when the Broiler lights:
Do you see a bright glow near the Broiler burner?
(Usually toward the top rear of the oven--)

Well, you should see a similar bright glowing near the BOTTOM rear of your oven, for the main burner to light off-- If you do NOT see this glowing-- then you need a new ignitor-

You can remove the bottom burner cover, and dig deeper into the repair if you like-
But a new ignitor needs to be exactly like the failed one-- the safety circuit is very fussy about the exact same ignitor-- or it will not allow lighting-- even with a new 'generic' installed.

How deep do you want to go into this repair?-- Maybe it is time to call the service people into do the job?-- You can tell them that you think the ignitor needs replacing-- and approx. what will they charge you for the service call and the ignitor?

I have a 6 yr old Tappan stove, model TGF657BFW5. the burners work fine, but the oven and/or broiler take 5 to 10 minutes to light. when the oven and/or broiler do light, the flame is only about 1/8 to 1/4...

that ignitor should lite the flame within 40 to 60 seconds if not the ignitor is bad.even though it glows red it doesn't mean it's good it works with amps change the ignitor

Possibly the bake igniter, the temperature sensor or the electronic oven clock/control. Does broil mode heat properly or does it run cool also? If broil heats to the proper temperature then the temperature sensor is probably ok. That leaves the ignitor or the controller which takes some more troubleshooting. If it is the controller, we repair them at www.fixyourboard.com.

Hi, It very well could be the ignitor. Sometimes they work at first and then will not open the gas valve later in cycle. You can set the oven to heat and watch the ignitor. If it glows and the gas will not ignite in 30 to 45 seconds, the igniter is getting weak. I jope this helps.

Check the burner ports near the ignitor for blockage. I had one of these units, and the ignitor was not mounted correctly, and caused a similar problem

If you use a multimeter, you can test the gas valve where the white and yellow wires connect is where your terminals for bake on that valve are. If you have continuity there, then check to make sure that igniter is wired ok.

Kenmore oven and broiler do not work

Hi and welcome.
Just because you see a glowing ignitor that does not mean it is "good". You need to check the circuit amperage to be sire. Weak ignitor are ultra-common for the appliance technician to see. The minimum amperage required to open the gas valve is around 2.9 amps. if you have access to an amprobe, read the amperage draw thru one of the ignitor's lead and you will see very quickly if it is good or not. Bad oven valves are much less likely than a weak ignitor. Many do-it-yourselfers replace the oven valve because they see the ignitor is glowing and assume that the ignitor must be good.
