Is this a convergence amplifier problem on my Mitsubishi projection CRT? (w/ picture)

Hello,
I have a picture of the screen here: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/gallery/d/9551-2/TVconvergence.jpg

The TV allows only blue and red adjustments, not green. So I can't adjust this.
Is this a problem with the convergence amplifier circuits?

Thank you very much in advance.

This TV belongs to my in-laws. The TV has not moved in years. All of a sudden, they said the picture looked "funny". I displayed the alignment grid and that's what it looked like (in the picture).

    Thank you very much.

As I originally suspected based on the symptoms (and other posts on this website), the convergence amplifiers were bad. So after 20 minutes, the TV is back up and running.
A simple Yes/No answer would have helped a little more.
    Thanks for trying.
    Lou

..hi again.. the funny thing about troubleshooting is that sometimes we dig deep enough aiming to resolve what we should.

if your unit was set for how many years now it might be a cold solder connections mainly in its printed circuit board in convergence and focusing circuitry. speaking of picture alignment likely in color are greatly affected by magnetic fields generated from focusing rings and or coils thus these coils could loose power to produce the necessary field. also if you can find the RGB color rays pls do check that all three is running fine. hav a nice day for you..

..also pls not try adjust internal settings from trimmers, coils and the like just try to look for cold solder first.. good luck..

Mitsubishi rear projection picture that has a blue/green tint

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then yourconvergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit fromTvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Mitsubishi WS-55805 CRT projection TV with

This problem is most likely caused by damage in the convergence output amp IC's; this model uses STK392-040. Fairly common for various fuses that protect the DC supplies for these amp IC's to open as well.

My rear projection 51mp392h has color distortion on the bottom third of the screen,it curves up in the middle. Is this a picture tube

Hello tj444,

This is not a picture tube problem. This could be what is called pincushion distortion. It is caused when the is a malfunction in the deflection coils and the inability to correct for the curvatures caused by the CRT. The pincushion distortion can also be caused by the degradation of the functionality of the convergence amplifiers in the TV set. I would suggest that you have a TV technician examine the deflection circuitry and the pincushion circuit, this would also include the convergence amplifiers.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Coulor distortion at the top left of the screen

Hello jordan ashe,

This is an indication that the green CRT is having a convergence problem. This might be caused by the convergence amplifier or by the CRT. Does the rest of the picture look OK? and in addition can you supply a picture of your TV so as I can see what you are seeing and develop a proper diagnosis?

Thank you,

50 " mitsubishi projection tv

This website:

http://www.techlore.com/forum/thread/18547/Mitsubishi-convergence-IC-s-used-in-the-differant-models/

says your model uses the STK393-110 convergence chip. Another site I looked at said that was a 6 channel amplifier so I'm guessing you only need one to repair your TV.

If you do some google searches on "stk392-110 convergence problem" you'll find some good sites that discuss how to repair the tv. The STK392-110 is a convergence amplifier that is used any many other sets.

Good luck.
