Water dispenser fine but ice maker not working

I have a kenmore side by side (not sure of model no.), I recently replaced the self piercing saddle valve with a larger 1/4" non-piercing type. After I turned the water back on the dispenser worked better than before, but now the ice maker isn't doing anything (and yes the arm is in the on position). Can anyone steer me in the right direction on what to do or check before calling a repairman to come out??

Hi. A good way to check the ice maker water solenoid valve is to swith the wire lead from the dispenser water solenoid valve to the ice maker water solenoid valve. Now push the water dispenser lever and water should come out your ice maker fill tube. If not, either the fill tube is frozen or the ice maker water solenoid valve is bad. Take the 1/4 inch tube that runs up the back of your freezer off at the ice maker water solenoid valve and blow thru it. If you can't, the tube is frozen. If you can, the valve is bad. Good luck, Mack

I have found the solution to my ice making prob. The fill tube above the tray was iced up, a few screwdriver passes to break it up and I had ice in about 3 hours. I still think I may have a prob but this was a quick fix. Thanks for the help guys.

My ice maker doesnt make any ice

check fill tube in back to make sure no frozen ice obstructing water flow... also make sure you have a clean filter on unit or it has been changed recently.... there are normally dual water valves on these models... one will work dispenser and one will work ice maker make sure your getting water to ice maker itself... if you are indeed getting water it just will not dump most likely you have a broken gear motor orthe heater in the ice maker has failed.. get another ice maker ....

I have the Kenmore version of this product and the same thing happened. My...

I had water leaking in to the freezer compartment of my LG french-door refrigerator (LFD25860). It was getting on to food in the main basket and embedding it in a block of ice, as well as puddling-up on the bottom of the freezer and eventually blocking the door from closing properly. Because the water seemed to be covering a wider area than you would expect from a blocked defroster drain I didn't believe that my problem was covered by the other FixYa recomendations -and it turned out I was right.
The problem turned out to be that the "funnel" that the water flows through to fill up the ice tray was blocked by a solid piece of ice. When the icemaker would call for more water it would flow down the clear tube (with the open slots on the top) hit the ice and spray/overflow in to the freezer compartment.
The solution was obviously to pop this ice out, but that did require me to remove the icemaker from the wall of the freezer compartment. To do this you
  • remove one screw from the bracket on the bottom of the icemaker
  • Slide the icemaker up and slip it off of the two screws with rubber grommets on them.
By the time I got to that stage I had already removed the basket from the main drawer and removed the pull out tray/basket from the drawer pulls (by simply lifting the plastic tab on the right side and lowering the plastic tab on teh left side). I am not sure if you can remove the icemaker without this step, but I believe so.
Also, if you want to entirely remove the icemaker from the freezer there is only one plug with wiring to undo. As I mentioned above, the water hose doesn't not connect to the icemaker, it ends above the "funnel" and the water drops in. So removal is much simpler than you might expect.

As for the cause of the ice block, I am not sure but I believe it was either because the ice maker made too much ise one time and some cubes could not pop out. When additional water entered the funnel it didn't flow in to the ice tray, backed up, and froze in the funnel. The other thought is that when the door was not closed properly while our grandparents were visiting, the ice melted and subsequently re-froze causing the problem.

After piercing the pipe with the saddle valve how many turns to the left to supply water and enough pressure to ice maker.

Always all the way in and then all the way out. Don't worry about too much water pressure. The valve on your Ref. will handle that.

Low water pressure on kenmore side by side with PUR filtration

You must make sure your water line isn't kinked. You may need to replace your saddle valve. Get rid of the self piercing type.

Water dispenser is very low

If it connects to your house plumbing via a saddle valve, replace the saddle valve. Avoid the self piercing type as they poke a very small hole in the house water line and will get plugged easily or the needle inside the valve will break off and drift in and out of the hole in the line.Other possibilities are: Plugged water filter (time to replace) or your water line is hooked up to a reverse osmosis system (RO) and you aren't getting enough flow and pressure through the RO system. Connect straight to house plumbing if that's the case. I would imagine you have hollow egg shell looking ice cubes too...?

Kenmore Side/Side Frig Model 57765791 Water dispenser quit.

  1. listen for click of the switch when you try and get water,
  2. make sure you have water to valve on back of refrigerator, turn off water and take line loose place in a bucket and turn water on, you should have a strong flow of water, it is common for people to have a self piercing saddle valve on the water line. these valves plug easily
