Fax scanning feeds paper 1/4 way, I have to wait about 23 seconds before the rest of the page is scanned through.

Sounds like it got set to "immediate" transmission somehow, rather than "memory" transmission -might be as simple as a button on the operation panel, but I'm not a "canon" guy.
You can get the manual here if you don't have one:

Select "office products", and follow the prompts

MFC-490cw Color Inkjet Multi-Function Printer: how to send a fax...

Most of these will send a fax without even using the PC. Just connect a phone line, place the document in the proper position, usuallu print side up on newer models, and push the fax button, it should prompt you for the number. Once dialed,, the paper will feed into the scanner portion of the multi, and you will see it on the menu bar saying sending page 1, 2 etc, after if is done sending, it will dial and connect, yu should hear the typical noise a fax makes. then it will say fax sent or end or something similar, that's it, try sending one to a friend to make sure it's working. Now some simpler machines require you to open the scanner portion and lay the paper down in the glass manually, mine does it both ways. In that case just skip the feeding part, and dial wait for it to scan and send.

Whats the scan platform

Scan platform in english is Were you shove the stuff to send ;) ie dirty feed roller, paper detect switch stuck or fragments of paper in original feeding paper path area or feeding stuff too thick or stiff, or if multi document issue it is the pad or roller that sits under the main feed roller...al this is nothiong to do with paper tray full of blanks it is the original feeler area on top..

Same error should occur doing local copy, check feed section/roller

Cheers hope that helps

Feeder scanner stop after 1cm scan/fax

You need to clean the rollers inside the feed section, use an alcohol wipe.. or something like methylated spirits and a rag..

Paper jams when faxing or scanning

  1. Turn the printer off and open the access cover.
  2. Look for any obstructions in the paper path and remove them if necessary. (It is possible to move the carrier assembly with the power off.)
  3. Turn the printer on, load some paper, and press the Form Feed button.
  4. Watch the paper as it feeds through and try to determine where the jam is occurring.
  5. Check to see if all the rollers are turning.

If all the rollers are turning, there may be something in the feed path that you can't see. Go to step 6.
If not, there is probably a feed motor or a gear problem and the printer may require service.
  6. If the paper is jamming under the carrier assembly, you may be able to fix it using the manual feed slot.
  7. Turn the printer off.
  8. Take a #10 envelope and feed it through the left side of the manual feed slot until it comes right through the printer to the back of the exit rollers.
  9. Move it up and down first, and then slowly move it over to the right side. If something is stuck under the black guide plate, this may work it loose.

When faxing or scanning the paper stops feeding

Thank you for contacting Fixya Support.
Open the Printer Cover.......... 2. Remove both the Catridges from the Printer............ 3. Move the Catridge Carrier which holds the catridge from right to left and from left to right for about 10 times............ 4. Try to make a copy without the catridges........If this works and it gives a Blank Page out............ 5. Insert both the catridges turn the printer off and turn it on again........... 6. Now it should work fine........
Good Luck......

Muratec F-520

It could have something to do with the automatic document feeder. There could be something in there that is blocking the paper from feeding in there correctly. It could be the feed tires or the belt as well in the document feeder.

It should be looked at by a technician in your area in case there are some parts that need to be replaced.

Scanning

Our problem is not solved. It was suggested the feeder needed cleaning or wasn't working. The feeder works as we make copies of documents. If one is scanning can you feed the document or can you only scan one page at a time by placing it on the window?

Paper jams when trying to send fax (original goes in short way then jams) unit has had little use it establishes connection and then stops and jams when commencing scan

look in paper path(scanner compartment were paper feeds) to ensure there is no pieces of small paper or foriegn items in this area preventing paper from going all the way through if this fails clean the feed roller in document scan area with a micrfiber cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol
