Dear Expert, I have a 5 year old Toshiba 27A34 television. about six months ago, ever since the Canadial program suppliers (Cable and Satellite) started with playing with the digital and HD picture, I have lines across the top of my screen. Its as though the picture is to big for the screen, and it folds over; but this does not happen when an HD picture is on. It used to be that one could adjust the height of the picture very easily with the controls at the back of the TV set but not on this model! I have been in touch with the local Toshiba technician and he wants $140 minimum just to come out and look????? CAN I ADJUST THIS????

yes there is but there are 3 capacitors in the vertical circuit that go bad causing a height problem, white lines on top,or a very small height. change the capacitors in the vertical section.the yoke on the back of the picture tube has 2 coil sets on it,one is horizontal, and the other is vertical.the connector next to the flyback transformer is the horizontal. follow the wiring from the other connector and it will take you to the vertical drive ic located on a heat sink.the three capacitors go bad because of heat from the heatsink cooling the vertical drive ic.
Depending on the universal remote you can usually program the remote without knowing the codes. One way is to turn on the television, then follow the basic programming instructions for the remote, but instead of entering a code, hit the power button over and over again until the television turns off.
I hope this helps.

this problem is due to
1 not proper voltage on crt terminals
2 check video output supply voltage
3 check luminance section of chroma ic
4 if tv is very very old than there is a possibility of crt getting weak
this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
