I just recently bought a 1.8 cu ft Kenmore Elite over the range convection microwave oven. The microwave works great, but when I use it as a convection oven, It emits a strong burning plastic or electrical fire scent. The exhaust is in recirculation mode. It only occurs when heating by convection.I returned it to the store in exchange for a new one and the same thing happened. Is this normal? Loud hum is usually due to faulty hv diod, resonance capacitor, or the magnatrone feed thru capacitor , chk it with a ohm meter , one by one n replace it ..

If your microwave buzzes loudly and produces no heat you probably have a defective power .... I have a whirlpool oven range and it's less than a year old. .... Humming sound stops when I open door to remove food, but when door is closed, ...
The loud noise and no heat means that the magnetron has failed. It the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. When it fails it shorts out, causing the transformer to heat up. That is what was causing the burning smell. The cost of a replacement magnetron is around $130-150 range so it may not make sense to have it fixed.
When the oven does not heat, the problem is usually due to the magnetron failing. It the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It fails by shorting out causing a loud buzzing noise. The burning smell is the being magnetron overloaded due to the short. It not worth fixing since the replacement cost of a magnetron is close to the price of a new oven. Sorry.
sounds like same problem again.... the magnetron is what does the heating and if the display is working and just humming sounds like the mag is not coming on .... could be the capacitor but most likely the magnetron again..... i am a appliance /heating and air company out of texas we work on these things everyday and is very common problem...
thanks a/c and heating unlimited
good luck

This can be caused by grease etc. inside
the oven and on the wave guide which is the paper like thing in the oven. If
you can remove it look for burnt areas which may can be scraped off or you may
need to replace it. An appliance parts store usually has the material you can
cut to fit you own.
you have done well out of the oven . it sounds that certain components are well worn and probably no able to get parts best advice it time to buy a new one
You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.
