Hi there, if you want to find out, try opening the computer, carefully remove the hard drive, and look at the label. It should tell you what kind it is. Then, carefully connect it back to the computer.

Manual for SATA Hard Drive HD Bay Adapter for IBM ThinkPad T40

If google and manufacturer website are of no help then ask a search agency like http://manualfox.com - They do a great job.
The service is not for free, but often worthy (you only pay if they find what you are asking for).

IBM T-40 issues

When you download the T40 device drivers, they need to be the XP versions.
When you run the driver programs they will be unzipped/expanded to the hard drive in a folder c:\drivers. Then you need to open the various folders and run the setup programs to install the various drivers.
NOTE - The T40 series laptops come with various different manufacturers devices (eg. there are a few different wireless model LANs) and if one version driver doesn't work you need to install a different one. It is a bit of trial and error to find the right one.

How to installed new hdd in ibm t40

We have a tonne of T41's here at work, but I can't remember if they use IDE disks or SATA.

If it *is* SATA, you need to get the SATA drivers from IBM's website, extract and put them on a floppy disk.

Start the Windows install, then when it says to press F6 to load additional drivers, do that. Feed it the floppy disk, and go on with the options.

In short, the Windows installer can't see the SATA disk without the driver being "pre-installed".

Hard Drive

Hi Patrick,

ATA and SATA are basically the same. The SATA drives won't work with the machines that are designed for IDE, so you're stuck with IDE on the I-series. Check out pricewatch.com for buying hard drives. You'll be able to get them for half the price Bestbuy sells them for.

I'm not sure what's involved in getting the fingerprint device to work, if it's just a driver or a combination of driver and software. I've never worked with or had one before. I'll look into it. Have you read any of the forums at IBM's support site on this?
