Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

The control panel on my stackable washer and dryer got fried during a power surge. While the stackable is 8 years old, it still looks new and runs fine normally and has not been over used. The tech estimate is $250-300 but he says I should buy a new machine since my machine is older. With new stackables going at over $1000.00, and my rental property located out of state in Florida, I am thinking a fix is better. What do you think? Fix or buy new?

At 8 years old I think you got your money's worth out of it. (no offence) but if this is for a rental property and you are not close to repair any issues that may come up you have to ask yourself is it worth repairing a item that has and avg 10 years or less life span at 1/3 its cost to buy a new one. If you are not happy with the price of the newer units buy one from the loaner section of a home store or a scratch and dent unit then get the extended service contract with the money you save and you wont have to deal with this issue for 5yrs or more and should one come up you can have some one else deal with it.

I went to Sears today and asked! They said use high efficiency detergent (marked HE on the label) and put it directly in the washer with the clothes. Mystery solved!

Could be the idler pulley, or the dryer seals.

if you have a broken belt... remove the back. and the drum support. then you can remove the belt... and replace it with the new one...pull back the pulley and them loosen the belt... let me know

No power to washer, dryer has bpower...

Might be a broken wire going down to the washer portion. I found that once on a stack dryer: Remove the control panel and look for a loose quick connect or broken wire.That was what was wrong with this un I think. Drop the splash pannel first then remove the screws to control and drop it out then check quick connects and wires is what I would do. -PawPaw

3 year old GE stackable washing machine, had water coming out the top and would not drain or go through cycle, when shut off it drained a little but when turned on again it filled up and over flowed.

My LG Tromm WM2277HB washer shut down during a power surge and will not power back on. Have unplugged for several hours, still no good. Looked at solutions posted on this site and it appears my PCB board...

Well I for one would go along with your prognosis, it seems logical to me.. this IS a common occurance when this type of thing, a power surge happens.. Remember Occam's razor.

Water under stackable washer dryer

The front panel comes off and you will be able to trace the water source. These combo units spin immediatly and if the drain is slow the water will spin up over the edge of the tub during drain.

Can you buy a frigidaire stackable washer separately?

Have you had a qualified service man look at your machine? I would think that the burned rubber smell would direct you to examine the belt (found in the very bottom after removal of front cover).
If it is the belt it is a very easy fix on this machine. The not draining part wouldn't be related to the belt the pump that does the draining is driven by its own electric motor and is easily visible when the front cover is off. Its located on the bottom left side. If a sock or other small item manages to get over the side of the basket it always ends up jamming the pump.
You would have to take the pump apart to retrieve the item and restore pump function
