How many memory slots does the philips freevents x56 laptop have?. i can only find one.

Most times the memory slots will be on the bottom of the laptop. You just remove the power cord, remove the battery then remove the screws to the cover that houses the memory. Look for little icons on the cover, the circular discs will be the cd drive and the hard drive. The memory cover icon will have a jagged square on it.

If the memory is not on the bottom of the laptop then it will be located under the keyboard and palmrest area which means you will have to take them apart to get to it.

use a pin on the hole in front of CDROM to open the CD ROM

I can only find them second hand with http://www.notebookrepair.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5097 as an example.
They look fairly easy to fit as well.

There is one screw holding the keyboard in from the bottom - remove this, unclip the 4 clips across the top with a bank-card etc. and you're away. Remove the ribbon, Replace, and reverse for re-assembly.

there are 2 memory slots under the keyboard cover at the front right of the laptop. If you unscrew the 4 screws at that run along the front of the base and the 2 that relate to the front right as you look down at the keyboard you will be able to gently unclip the keyboard cover on that side and gain access. be careful though as the cover is held in place on the left by a hidden clip that I have not found as yet.
The dimm installed in the back slot is a 512mb ddr333mhz pc2700 sodimm.

Could be anyone of a number of things related to internal batteries. Let it charge for a while (does the charging light come on on the laptop? - isn't clear if the green light is on the powersupply or the laptop itself) and trying again.

try to clean the cabinet for dust and check if the cpu fan is working properly.
