Can't install HP Photosmart c4280

I have spent countless hours with HP techs and sites but to no avail. The HP c4280 installs effortlessly on our other computer that has Windows XP. Installing it on our other one (the one we purchased with this printer and for this printer) that has Windows Vista has been one big nightmare. When it's time to turn on printer and plug in USB cable all seems fine, but that's as far as it goes. Keep getting Windows couldn't find driver software. I've tried the cd that came with printer and downloading from HP's site. And a multitude of other ways from HP techs and other sites. Would appreciate any advice. I can't even begin to tell you all the other ways I have tried installing it.

I have the same problem! What is worse, is that I have installed it, on my

computer with Vista, before! When I had to send the computer (Toshiba laptop) out for repair (twice), I couldn't repeat the process, successfully, again, however. I also have no problem hooking up on XP, either. Can someone help us out here?!

I have been trying to add the HP Photosmart C4280 printer to my computer, but it does not even offer this device as one I can add. I recently moved, and it worked fine before, but I cannot find the disk to re-install, and not even sure that is what I need to do. HELP! Printer help for dummies.

I just went through a similar situation as both of you guys with the C4280. The problem started when I used System Recovery and reset my pc to factory standards. While reinstalling all my old programs and devices I left the User Account Control on (had it turned it off before the Recovery) and didn't think anything when I allowed the program to install because the software screen said to just allow it. I did but when it came time to connect the device via usb it got to step 6 then pretty much stopped. After that I tried a bunch of different things that kept me up forever eventually downloading 2 things. One was some kind of hpudatesvr.exe that also needed permission to run and the other was Lemmor's driver package that was suggested. Once the exe was up and running it kind of disappeared and always ran at startup, no help at all. Pretty much the same for the driver package, but it did give one detail that the installation cd didn't. It says specifically to turn off User Account Controls and other anti-virus software as they have been known to cause installation failure. I did all those things the next time and it still didn't work because this time the damn hpupdatesvr.exe was killing the program in the same place somehow. Since I didn't know where it was or how to kill it and I only had 3 programs on my computer I just recovered again and did another install with all User Account Controls off. Works fine now.

Mjap is smart.

I have Windows XP so S.O.O.L for Vista Users...

Go to the Control Panel on your Start Menu.
Next, click on your Printers and Other Hardware.
Look for Scanners and Cameras and click it.
The icon HP Photosmart C4200 should be there.
Click it and the Scanner and Camera Wizard SHOULD pop up and BAM! It's fixed.

I thank mjap for guiding me.

SOURCE: Can't install HP Photosmart c4280

You have to know first if your printer is Vista compatible.
If yes, you need the vista drivers in order to get your printer connected with vista.

When the system prompt for the driver, click BROWSE and Select the location
Open the folder when the downloaded driver is and click OK
This must be fixing your problem

Find the windows vista compatible driver for your model, run the installation package, and that should be it. If not open your printer configuration dialog from the control panel and continue from there.

I have already the HP Photosmart C4280 All-in-One: Printer, Scanner, Copier but I can not install it to my Loptap (acer)which has no CD drive to install the same... So I need to download a free...

your driver is available for free download here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3192753&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20
you will need to chose your operating system on the first page.
the second page has the drivers. personally i always download the full software and drivers together (they include the extra software to edit photos and stuff)
download them to your desktop (so you can find them) double click on the icon it creates to start the install, follow the prompts, restart the computer when asked..
