The newer models have plastic end caps that will melt when the bearing heats up. This will cause the cap to go "off-centre" and the roller will vibrate badly. If this is the case, you will have to replace the roller.
If the belt is a geared drive, check the belt for any missing teeth.

My beater bar does not turn, belt is on, it has vacuum,

Hello, Rudy -

Without knowing the make and model of your vacuum cleaner it is a challenge to answer your question.

Some vacuum cleaners have an on/off switch to turn the beater bar/brush on and off, so that when using the machine on hardwood, a moving beater bar/brush will not damage the wood.

You may find these troubleshooting steps helpful:
(Quote)
If something gets caught in the brush roll, the overload protector shuts off the roller. Lie the vacuum down and turn it over to access the brush roller after turning it off and unplugging it from the wall. Check the roller for threads, hair or other debris wrapped around the roller. A pair of scissors can cut through long threads and help you to remove them from the roller. Double-check the belt on the roller to verify it sits in the groove made for it. The brush roller won't function properly when the belt is misaligned.

Personal opinion: Find a local vacuum repair business, take your vacuum cleaner there, and have a trained technician inspect your vacuum cleaner and recommend the proper repair and quote you a price.

Best wishes.

What wrong with my vacuum?

I expect something is rubbing on the beater bar or belt. Remove the beater bar and belt and look for a paper clip, scrap of material, etc.

I replaced my Bissell vacuum cleaner belt with a Bissell belt. I ordered it from them so I know it's the right one. I replaced it and the roller won't spin and the belt smells like it burning.

Beckiande485:

You will need to unplug the vacuum from the wall, lay it down so you can see the bottom of the vacuum head and remove the bottom plate (foot plate) Probably philllips head screws. pull up on the roller (called the beater bar). The beater bar will come straight up. Disconnect the belt and check the fittings at the ends of the beater bar... I'll bet that they don't spin easily (The fittings have roller bearings in them, and the roller bearings get gunked up with hair, carpet fibers and dirt). Pull the end fittings off of the roller and remove all of the hair and carpet fibers off of the end of the beater bar and the fittings and out of the bearings. Check to make sure that the roller bearings spin freely. If they do not spin freely, put some rubbing alcohol in the bearing (you can pour it onto the bearing and spin the bearing manually until it spins freely, or you can use a spray bottle with alcohol in it as I do. Once the bearing spin freely, dry them out so no alcohol remains in the bearing, then a drop or two of light machine oil (3 in 1 oil will do) in each bearing and spin the bearing again to distribute the oil. Now would be a good time to check for any clogs in the vacuum head where the hose connects, and check the hose for clogs. Reassemble the beater bar and reinstall it in the vacuum with a new belt, reinstall the foot plate.

Your machine should run like new.

The brush on my Electrolux Versatility will not spin. You can spin it by hand, but the motor will not spin it.

Hello, W/D here.
Since the brush will not spin, but the motor works, either the belt has come off of the motor shaft, the belt is worn past it's useful life, or the beater bar has seized.
1. Turn off the power (unplug).
2. Remove the bottom plate. With the plate off, use your finger to test the tension of the belt. It should be tight, and roll when you roll the beater bar by hand.
3. Remove the beater bar and belt. Inspect the beater bar, particularly by the bearings. Remove any twine, hair, etc.
4. Inspect the belt for abnormal wear. If there is any significant wear in the belt, replace it.
5. Reassembly is in the reverse order. Place the belt on the beater bar. While holding the beater bar close to it's position, place the belt on the motor shaft. Rotate the beater bar bearings to their proper position and install the beater bar. Replace the cover plate.

Best regards, --W/D--

Vacuum won't pick up any dirt - there's no roller marks when vacuuming carpet. Roller does turn and filters are clean.

Hi,

When you turn the roller, you should feel some resistance from the belt. Remove the base blate that surrounds the beater bar. Check the belt. Take care in removing the beater bar, so you can get it back in the same way it comes out. Clean the beater bar while you have the bottom open. If you remove the beater bar to replace the belt, take the time to inspect the cavity behind the beater bar where the vacuum picks up. That is where vacuums usually stop up. Reassemble the vacuum. If necessary, slip the belt over the motor shaft and then slide the roller undre the belt. Install the beater bar back in the sockets and replace the base plate.
Best regards,

Power bar makes loud groweling sound when turning?

Ours has been doing the same thing...the beater bar end plates, black thins, and the little groove area they go into are worn of the front and rear surfaces. You could buy a new beater bar but the wear on the housing would require quite a bit of work to replace that hole piece.

You will also notice that the belt is loose due to this wear.

Solution....duct tape to the rescue!

I took out the beater bar and took a strip of duct tape about 1-1½ inches long and folded that over to be a long narrow pad that fits in the groove that the beater bars end plate slides into...the groove to the rear of the beater bar.

Then I took a piece of duct tape and taped the little pad/shim I made to the rear edge of the beater bar so the pad will be in the groove when the bar is installed.

Put the bar back in carefully and no more noise and the belt is now tight again.

The fact that these 2 parts wear on each other and this affects the tension of the belt is what causes the noise...the sloppy belt will get so bad it will start jumping over the teeth and soon after it will break.

My wife was impressed...hope it works for you too...

Would make sense to make a more permanent solution but I just did this a couple days ago and we have vacuum the whole 2500 sq. ft. house with no extra noise...I have time to figure out better...maybe a harder plastic cut to fit in there...

Dyson vacuum cleaner-brush bar is frozen

Hi If your Dyson has a brush protection design - i.e. roller bar on the top of the hood on the left hand side then the DYson can't be repaired by you- serviceman or professional care can replace it.
However if the Dyson doesn't have the roller bar on top of the hood, flip the machine over so that the beater brush is facing upwards, locate three/four screw heads that can be undone with a coin and remove the sole plate assembly. This should give you a clean view of the brush bar, drive belt and dirt channel. Ensure everything is clean espcially if the brush bar has lots of hair or threads tightly corded around. Then locate the drive belt and check to see if it has snapped. Grasp the beater bar gently upwards and the belt and brush can then be removed. Fit a new belt on carefully and check the tension as it will be tight.

Beater bar on Dyson upright won't turn when handle is lowered

I have finally fixed my sister's dyson dc 15 beater bar problem. It was just 2 tiny broken wires connect to circuit board lead to the beater bar. The wires broke where they go through the black rubber gommet. You need a torx screwdriver tx 15 to remove 2 plastic covers to access the wires. When looking at the front of the vacuum, the gray covers located on the right side of the vacuum. 1 big cover with a black rubber gasket and other small gray cover is on the rotating ball area.
This my new year resolution is to warn people not to buy Dyson vacuum cleaner ( Junk) design to break down! Shame on you Dyson!!!! Save your money find good old vacuum cleaner with metal parts.

OLD IS IN NEW IS JUNK!

Happy New Year!
