There must be some small piece of paper or paper dust buildup near the left side of the paper feed/press mechanism under the printheads.
Open the cover and inspect the far left area along the line of head travel - there often is a metal plate with small wheels that stabilize the paper, and under that plate look for some foreign objects. Try gently removing them with a toothpick - it is soft enough not to cause any damage, and also will soak in any ink residue that might be left there.

I have a Canon Imagerunner 1023if and have black smudges along the left edge of paper, both copies and printed directly from computer.

this is possibly a problem in the fuseing part of your machine, where the paper heats up at the back, the fuser roller could be worn out. and your toner could be sticking to it.

Canon PIXMA MX700 printhead immediately coated with ink, smudges

It's likely that the foam pads that the print head rests on when the printer is not in use are saturated with ink. They're to the right as you look into the printer: a rectangular one for black ink and a square one for the colored ink. If you power the printer off and back on, with the cover open, you'll see where the printhead goes to rest.

The pads aren't easy to get at, but you can blot them with a paper towel. Gummy, half-dried ink dissolves in rubbing alcohol, and you can soak a paper towel or a cotton ball with alcohol and wipe down the area. I've had good luck soaking the pads with alcohol, then blotting them dry with a rag.

Printer is creating a crease and smudge down center of page.

There sounds like there is somthing in the path of the printhead. Using a flash light, remove back cover of machine and look for a small piece of paper, etc. Be careful not to jam anything in to th machine. It may take running a thick piece of paper through manually with your hands to remove the object.

Question!

The Canon i560 has a manual duplex feature--in other words, once the printer prints one side (ie. odd pages), it will instruct you to turn the paper around in the correct position and reinsert to print the back side (ie even pages.)

Canon i560 won't print black text anymore

I have now found the solution elsewhere in the internet: black text only prints on the Canon i560 if selct "normal paper", but not,for instance, if you have "professional photo-paper" selected.
