It started with the tv going from color to black and white and then the screen went completely black but the sound still works. What could be causing this problem?

Hi,It sounds like it could be the color wheel or DMD.The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms. The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will get color distortion ,black and white picture and sometimes you will hear humming noises. The DMD is another possibility. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q One simple test is to display menu and if it's affected then most like will be an issue w the DMD board.Found the complete set with color wheel and DMD included here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/SAMSUNG-30407272050-Light-Engine-w-Color-Wheel-p/1139314.htm Have a blessed one!

Replace the Ribbon Wire between the Mini DV unit and the lcd screen. Samsung wanted $136 to repair same issue for me. Screen started with colored lines eventually going to white lines and finally screen went completely black and stayed black. I replaced the Ribbon Wire after purchasing a copy of the systems schematics and repair manuel online. With total cost of everything i bought to make this repair I saved a little over $115 from what Samsung wanted for the same repair.
Make sure that the color control level is set to the default or 50% to start with. This should be in the Video menu.
The colour for the tuner and for the encoded base-band video uses a circuit area called the colour demodulator. It is possible that this cirucuit area has failed and needs servicing.
This is usually caused by the tuner which loses the chrominance part of
the NTSC signal. Your did not say how you have it connected but it you
try using a composite video input (yellow jack) and get the color OK
than it must be the tuner which is not cheap but is worth having
replaced.
Hope Ya Fix it!
Did you have color problems in past? Most of these sets have convergence problems. Amps goes out. But you should have seen some type of distortion from color, red, blue, green. If no color problems then maybe vertical ouput out or horizontal output bad.
