The Protron PLTV-32 only has an analog tuner (NTSC). So you need a digital to analog converter to watch OTA programming. A basic d-t-a converter will give you Standard Definition output (480i) (either on the TVs antenna in or the composite in inputs).
Since the TV can show a high definition signal (720p), you could also use an HD tuner set top box. However, these are significantly more expensive than the $40-70 SD converter boxes that were sold for purchase with the government coupon last year. Alternatively you can use a DVR with a tuner as your set top box (computer with a tuner card) to the VGA or DVI inputs on the TV.
If you are recording VHS tapes that contain macrovision, and most commercial tapes do, you can't record them with this DVR because it is compliant with the law that says you can't do it. So don't try. Download nearly every movie/tv show from the internet instead.
If you are recording from VHS tapes that you have created yourself from TV sources, or from camera, you must stabilize the picture. There are several devices like that. Do a google search on "vhs stabilizer".
If you have it connected to the 'antenna input' on your TV, change the channel up or down, and then back to 3/4 as appropriate. Sometimes the signal from the machine does not match exactly what the TV is looking for, but the TV will figure it out after you change the channel up or down. The AFC (automatic frequency control) will then try to re-tune the channel. If you have it connected using the composite, and r/w audio, then you likely have a problem inside the DVR. tom
