Most newer computer do not include any media disc for the purpose of restoration. This is for a couple reasons first it cuts down on the cost of the computer and second it cut down on piracy or in other words taking those media discs and installing them on another computer.
However Dell as well as many other computer manufactures use another method that will allow you to restore your computer back to the way it came out of the box.
At the end I included a couple links.
The first one is your "Owner's Manual". You can find all these steps in this manual as well.
The second are other documents relating to your xps400.
Good Luck and I hope this helps.
"Happy (insert preference here)" and "Merry New Year"
To restore your PC to factory settings:
Warning: Anything you added to your system after you purchased it will be deleted. The only way to recover those files and programs are to back them up. I would advise you to get some CD/DVDs and back everything up just to be on the safe side.
- Turn on you computer. During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
- Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>. (If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again). If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step
- On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
- On the next screen, click Confirm. The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
- When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer. NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
- When prompted, click Yes. The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
- Click Next. The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
- After the computer restarts, click OK.
