Protector mode does not just react to ambient temp. Try unplugging all the speakers from the back of the unit and turning it on. If it continues to go into protect mode, it is most likely a bad power supply or possibly a bad D/A circuit. If it does not go into protection mode when the speakers are disconnected, try hooking up one speaker at a time (while the unit is off) If the unit faults again when you turn it back on, it should point toward a bad speaker or crossed wires.

Thanks! I'm trying what you suggested. I'm also plugging the unit directly into the wall first (it was in a cheap surge suppressor initially). I've disconnected all the devices from it first and am trying to see if it works while plugged into the wall directly.
If it does work, I'll use your recommendation and plug in the devices one at a time (one is a TIVO HD Box, the other is a Sony BD player).
Well, that test lasted 12 minutes -- I plugged it directly into the wall and disconnected all the devices and the unit went into Protector mode in 12 minutes. Looks like I have a dud unit. Darn!
