Re: how do i get dolby digital to work on my kenwood...
Make sure your source is playing something that has been recorded in dolby digital, not all dvd's and tv boxes transmit dolby digital. what is your source?

I have the 405 and a Samsung 3600 which has onboard DTS Master/ Dolby True HD. Out of the 6 movies I 've watched, only 2 have given me Dolby Digital. Bottom line: If the movie doesn't have DD, you cant get DD on the 405. I thought just about all blu rays had DD but its not so. Its time for us to upgrade!
I have the 405 as well. My TV has an optical out and I run that straight to the 405 optical input. I set the input selector to DVD/CD (not DVD)and presto! TV audio out my speakers. It all comes down to the audio connections on your TV.
try to be a little more clear on what you are trying to do.do you have it connected to hdtv and cable box if so run hdmi cable from cable box to tv and then run optical cable from reciever to cable box you then must turn reciever to cd/dvd to listen to it leave reciever in auto mode go into cable box menu under audio and select dolby digital
Case 1: If your signal is weak, then the chances are that the feedback from your tv to the receiver's processor cannot interpret a Dolby Digital signal.
Case 2: Check the TV MENU AUDIO setting. Does your TV have a ON/OFF feature for the optical output, or any aux. speaker outputs?
more info would be nice. If you're using optical, make sure its securely in both the tv and your vr-405 receiver. I have owned the vr-405 since 2000 and i just purchased a sony 32xbr6. HDMI into the TV, optical out to the receiver, it sounds amazing!
You use rca cables to hook them up to each other. On the back of your Reciever make sure it is hooked to the cd. There should be speaker outlets in the back of the reciever. You should have suroundsound, Center, left and right speaker ports. I've never seen just 2. Crazy
