I had the same problem with my monitor, the problem was that one of the "pins" or "prongs" was bent and mashed flat on the monitor's port plug in cable (the cord from the monitor that plugs into the computer's monitor port). I carefully pried up the prong and straightened it out the best I could and that fixed the problem for me.
If the power light remains on after it goes black, the problem is the inverter board that powers the back light behind the screen, the cause is usually bad capacitors. To fix it, the board must be replaced or attempt made to repair the inverter board.
