A friend has built me a new HP computer. Previously I had a Brother HL-1440 printer working with my old computer. I went to Printers to select the compatible Brother HL-1440 for my 'new' computer, but there was no HL-1440, but other versions of Brother...

Brother has most of their drivers on their web site. However, the HL-1440 drivers are built into Win8. Plug your USB cable into your computer and the driver will load. You may need to use Windows Update and check the optional updates to find the driver. (If you use a parallel port (assuming one is on your computer, you will need to use the Add a Device wizard.)

As per the printer manufacturer website, Brother Hl-1440 printer is not compatible with Windows 7.

However, you may download & try installing the XP drivers for the printer in Windows XP mode.

To install in compatibility mode:
1.a. Right click on the setup file of the driver.
b. Click Properties.
c. Click Compatibility tab.
d. Under compatibility mode, check mark "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the drop down list.
e. Click Apply and then click ok.
2. a. Under "Privilege level", click "Run this program as an administrator".
b. Click apply and then click ok.
3. Install the driver successfully and restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

if its a new computer follow the instruction of your printer and / or take it in to Best Buy or something

check your drum may the corona ware is broken . change the drum.

I had the same problem. I finally totally uninstalled the printer from my computer, downloaded the "new" software from the Brother site, and reinstalled it. This is what finally worked for me (WinXPProf.).

I have a new HP laptop with Vista Home OS, and I just installed my HL-1440 with a driver that was installed automatically in the "New Printer" procedure in Windows, and it works perfectly.
